I think you only join Fb if someone young asks you. I was persuaded to join to receive photos of GDs. My sister-in-law was reluctant and then joined but after being inundated by requests from old students ended her Fb life.

On FB today I have received photographs of my American pen friend and some of her family. Until recently we hadn't been in touch for over 50 years but now we can make instant contact.

"The misuse of an apostrophe seems particularly annoying to people!"

Certainly i's... What do they think it's for, fer cryin' out loud?

It change's pronunciation 'sometime's - "don't" and "dont" are 'sure to 'sound different in your mind...

I proclaim today apo'strophe day - no 's' without a ''' It 'seem's 'silly or cour'se...

Just this afternoon I have, through FarceBook, renewed links with someone I last saw when we were in the same sax section in 1960!

It can be a waste of time, but it can also have benefits like the above, which are well worth while I reckon.

It's Twitter I can't be doing with...

Depends how far flung your family are, Waldforf. I find it vital for keeping in touch with mine in England and New Zealand and I get lots of photos of my gc and great gc.

Are you all on Facebook then? I am still sitting on the fence, as previously own teenage children said I should desist as a waste of time. However in the meantime first grandchild has arrived and her parents are very active on fb. Should I join to keep up?

I enjoy Facebook and although it is annoying to see certain words continually misspelt, I resist the temptation to correct. I have a quiet chuckle to myself when I see one friend's postings and the same errors keep on coming. Both her parents are teachers!

Yes, I think you are all right. I will take off my pedant's (just talking about one pedant here lol) mortarboard next time I go on Facebook ;0).

annodomini Sun 21-Apr-13 21:59:12

Same goes for mine, Greatnan. Even her texts are correctly spelt.

My grand-daughter is dyslexic, but she must be using spellcheck because her posts on FB are flawless.

Rosey On another forum I am known as Queen of the Pedants, but I wouldn't dream of correcting anything on FB because I think the rules of engagement are quite different from Normal English Syntax as we know and (obviously) love it wink
Facebook and texting belong to the younger generation - let them make the rulesgrin

I have been copy-and-pasting a lot of stuff into Local site listings from the websites of local businesses and one of the text boxes to fill in is for "description". I have quietly corrected some mistakes/typos that really leapt out at me - running a successful business does not necessarily go hand in hand with writing perfect prose, or vice versa.

Incidentally, those listings on the Local sites are not just for businesses to submit, or Local editors to sweat over. Anyone is welcome (very welcome! believe me) to list a business they know about and/or have used and add a review to that or any of the ones already listed.

Not to correct , just enjoy the posts .

I would never correct anyone's spelling, punctuation, or grammar, either on a forum or on Facebook, unless they asked for help.
If you look through Pedants' Corner, you will find several threads about this subject. The misuse of an apostrophe seems particularly annoying to people!

IMHO there are far more important things in the world to be worrying about, lucky you for having the time to worry about this smile

I go on Facebook quite a bit to keep in touch with my family and friends and have to stop myself from correcting the spelling and grammar of people who post on my page. What irritates me the most is the incorrect use of the apostrophe, with many people thinking it should be used with all plurals! I have decided to be diplomatic and not pull people up on their mistakes as I don't want them to think I'm being pernickety. What do others think? To correct or not to correct? Apologies if I've made any errors, it must be the ipad (ahem).
