Train station

I saw the first episode of the new series of Mr Selfridge at the weekend.

Am I right in thinking that the new character, a friend of Mrs Selfridge, is meant to be English?
At one point, she mentions the "train station". That set me wondering: would an English person really have used that term back in that era, as opposed to "railway station"?

And now I think most of us just say 'station' or if you are in London 'Waterloo', 'Victoria', etc. without adding 'station'.

Living in London I would say tube station, Baker Street, Bond Street etc. I have never given it a thought but I may use railway station to differentiate between tube and rail.

I don't remember anyone saying 'train station' much before this century.

If I mean railway station, I say station. If I mean bus station, I say bus station. If I mean where trams go to bed, I say tram depot (worked as clippy on Blackpool trams one summer). If I mean aeroplane station, I say airport.
Ship station? Port, harbour, marina.

Come on, grans! What else? smile

Power station. Radio station. Television station. And in the garden DH has a weather station! and of course Railway Station.

A railway station is a station for trains on a railway so I don't mind train station.
Train station – station for trains
Bus station – station for buses
Boat station – station for boats
and car parks/parking lots.

Aint language great?
