Annoyances!

I shout at the tv now......I must be getting old! It's only when I hear things like;
"For free"
"Off of"
"Should of"
"The hall needs painting" No it doesn't, it needs (to be) painted!

Another one is 'to' instead of 'too'. They sound different to me, and the meaning certainly is, but obviously not to some...

(Is that table reinforced?)

Wheniwasyourage Wed 10-Sept-14 19:38:23

That's a relief, Ana, I thought I might have to go into hiding as it's such a common thing, but at least now we can share the table to hide under. After you!

Ana Wed 10-Sept-14 19:30:54

Oooh, I do so agree, Wheniwasyourage...hmm

Wheniwasyourage Wed 10-Sept-14 19:28:13

This one is to be found in several places on GN at the moment, but I name no names. It annoys me at work too (I read medical notes and letters and it appears frequently). It is "loose" instead of "lose", as in "she wants to loose weight". Why is it so common, particularly when the two words are pronounced differently? NB, that was a question, with or without an Australian intonation. grin

Katek Tue 09-Sept-14 09:29:19

Lol!! grin

rosequartz Mon 08-Sept-14 23:22:03

I am not as yet katek but one or two on GN are, I think?

However, DD, SIL and DGC are all Aussies and we spend a lot of time there?

Katek Mon 08-Sept-14 22:24:22

More power to your elbow Rosequartz if you're a genuine Aussie! Fab country! (Back-pedalling furiously!!!!) Just don't like the inflection tacked onto that dreadful Estuary English. Don't like Estuary English anyway.

Wheniwasyourage Mon 08-Sept-14 18:59:33

What about that upright lady Laura Norder?

annodomini Mon 08-Sept-14 18:53:46

If I jumped in the shower, I might go through the bottom of the bath, incurring an almighty insurance claim, not to mention a fractured hip!

Pittcity Mon 08-Sept-14 18:48:50

Well "at the end of the day" it get's dark, like! D'ya know what I mean?

kittylester Mon 08-Sept-14 18:41:12

The checkout people at our Sainsbury 's jump on a till!

rosequartz Mon 08-Sept-14 18:40:48

KateK we're not Australian!
Some of us could be? Just saying? You wouldn't want to offend any of us would you? grin

rockgran Mon 08-Sept-14 18:34:44

My little grandson did jump in the shower, slipped, fell down, cried and wouldn't have a shower again for weeks!

Ana Mon 08-Sept-14 17:48:00

I got told off for mentioning that on a similar thread, anno! grin
Apparently lots of people do it...

annodomini Mon 08-Sept-14 17:19:51

I know someone who always 'jumps' in the shower. The mind boggles!

mrshat Mon 08-Sept-14 16:46:31

Yes to all the above!

Katek Mon 08-Sept-14 16:40:04

Wow factor!!!! That really winds me up!

numberplease Mon 08-Sept-14 16:20:08

People on TV programmes talk about "grabbing a shower", why, what are they going to do to the poor old shower?

vegasmags Mon 08-Sept-14 11:47:06

What gets my goat is the use of 'disinterested' instead of 'uninterested'.

janerowena Mon 08-Sept-14 11:39:31

To me, that says that it has 10% fat!

lefthanded Mon 08-Sept-14 11:30:08

Something that has annoyed me for years is seeing a product described as "90% Fat Free". What does that mean? To me, it suggests that 90% of it has no fat in it, while the remaining 10% has some (an unspecified amount) of fat. Not very helpful, is it.

Wheniwasyourage Mon 08-Sept-14 10:42:54

Why are previews always "sneak"? And why are so many things "iconic"?

Katek Mon 08-Sept-14 08:48:17

More annoyances.....misuse of 'wonder' for 'wander' and 'defiantly' for 'definitely'! Don't get me started on the rising inflection at the end of sentences-we're not Australian!

Anne58 Mon 08-Sept-14 07:03:15

A while ago an interviewer on Radio 4 said "different to" shock

What is the world coming to?

Nelliemoser Sun 07-Sept-14 23:36:33

I am so sick of hearing "going forward" instead of in the future.
It is such a stupid cliche.
This happened so often on Radio 4 last week I was swearing at the Radio all week.
