Uninterest

I think I would have said 'indifference' of the spectators though uninterest is quite OK. (Ha! spellchecker has put a red line under 'uninterest, clearly Chrome has never heard of it grin)

In respect of 'syncing' versus 'synching' (Chrome doesn't like the latter, either)as I've spent years teaching phonics and an 'i' after a 'c' commonly indicates that the 'c' is pronounced as /s/ I find I automatically mentally pronounce it as 'sinsing. As its root word is 'synchronise', in which the 'ch' spells a /k/ sound I think that the 'ch' should be retained, so, 'synching'. But then, I suppose some people will then think it's 'sinching' sad. How about we propose that it is spelled 'sinking'? Oh, that could cause problems too!

How about 'mic' as opposed to 'mike' for a shortening of microphone? Annoys me no end as I always read 'mic' as 'mick'...

Oh I see. Yes, that makes sense now.

Sorry, should be goab. Gob a bit.... er... blush

Yes, gob, but the guy is Spanish. Perhaps one could make allowances for the possibility that English is a foreign language to him. The phrase used was "the uninterest of spectators". I agree that "lack of interest" there would be better, but it's still great that he didn't say the 'disinterest' of spectators.

I've never heard "uninterest" as a noun, just as "disinterested" in place of "uninterested".

Surely you'd just say "lack of interest"?

'Uninterest' is such clumsy word - why not 'no interest ' or 'not interested?'

No, it's medalling of course. Ugh.

Yay!

Just been thinking about "modern" verbs. Is it syncing or synching?. Is there such a verb as to bluetooth?. And, vis à vis the Paralympics, should it be podiuming or podiumming?.

I don't know why people get that wrong Bags.
After all, you wouldn't say something was 'disinteresting' if you meant it wasn't interesting, would you?

Woohoo! Someone used 'uninterest' where they meant lack of interest instead of the usual but wrong 'disinterest'. He writes for El País, about bullfighting, but this was in an English paper.
