Strange terminology

Dh and I were watching the local news this evening. There was a report about the campaign to keep our local children's heart unit open.

Apparently, it has much better mortality rates than other hospitals. Somehow it didn't reassure me!

I don't always understand why mortality rates are taken into account. Some hospitals are used as specialist centres and take on the most severe and complicated cases that other hospitals cannot deal with - therefore their "mortality" rate is bound to be much higher than the hospital where more routine cases are carried out.
