Nothing's wrong with please. Please isn't the issue; dislike of other people's common parlance is the issue.

What irks me is the constant complaining about it on Gransnet.

No, I don't find the way other people talk does grate on me. What irks me is the constant complaining about it on Gransnet.

I remember standing behind an American woman in a queue for ice creams years ago and hearing her say 'I wanna get' ….. then asking each of her children what they wanted as they ummed and aahed and I remember thinking 'Ask them first, then say "Please may I have"!

I'm alarmed to hear that it is on the increase here.

I blame all the USA TV that is watched now, the "youth" are adopting all the Americanisms...My youngest talked about the trash the other day....he WILL NOT do that again in a hurry!

Hardly anyone says "Please may I have...?" It actually sounds quite stilted. "Could I have a... whatever.... please?" is just as polite.

I think you'll just have to lump "Can I get a...?" It is perfectly polite in America.

While I am at it.....why do the youngsters start their sentences with "So"...
