Thanks BradfordLass I stand corrected.
I've been away too long blush

BradfordLass72 Tue 09-Jul-19 00:42:08

Grammaretto No, it is definitely 'rode'.

He and his brothers rode on the South Island (as you would a surfboard) in order to fish up the North Island.

Te Waka a Maui (Maori name for South Island)
Te Ika a Maui (North Island)

Grammaretto Mon 08-Jul-19 18:37:53

Rowed or rode or perhaps road? Surely rowed BradfordLass

Just popped into this thread again, and have clareken to thank for Giles' surname, bit late, sorry, but I only drop in on the odd occasion to see what everyone is up to.

Johno I remember dear old Fred, his chimneys, machines and down-to-earth, intelligent delivery.

JackyB Most myths are ridiculous, they are simply a way of explaining, via the cultural mores of the time, an event, rule or attitude.
They bear no relation to real life, indeed they are often complete fantasy and shouldn't be seen in any way as realistic.

Maui and his brothers rode on the South Island of Aotearoa and fished up the North Island. That's how New Zealand came to be. grin

JackyB Tue 02-Jul-19 10:12:15

I have read several books on the Greek myths and they all seem ridiculous to me. They make no sense and are usually incoherent and totally unrealistic (OK they are about unrealistic beings, but their reactions are always inexplicable as far as I can see.) I like Stephen Fry but I'll give this book a miss. I'm not sure I'll listen to the programme because the jingle drives me mad!

Resurgam123 Tue 02-Jul-19 07:53:31

I find Brian Cox far too ponderous in how presents his stuff.
He does not seem to make it exciting .

Johno Tue 02-Jul-19 07:45:42

Fred Dibna proved one myth. Patronising Oxbridge B celebs should be taken with a very large chunk of salt.

BradfordLass72 Tue 02-Jul-19 02:57:47

Reading your comments makes me very grateful.

What joys (Fry, Cox et al) I obviously (and often thankfully) miss by not having TV or radio!!

It was the sentiments in the clip above which I felt were relevant - NOT the man, his voice or his colleagues. grin

Callistemon Mon 01-Jul-19 22:38:32

I like Brian Cox because he explains everything in an understandable way - and his voice is soothing!
Hooty my eyes were probably shut by then, soothed off to sleep grin

I don't particularly like Stephen Fry but do like his voice.
However, his book on the Greek myths had some poor reviews, I think.

cas58 Mon 01-Jul-19 22:05:32

Tillbell, they like Brian Cox because he's pretty. lol

HootyMcOwlface Mon 01-Jul-19 16:45:40

Tillybelle - did you see a Brian on The Planets on Sunday? Silhouetted against the sky and windblown? I had to laugh!

hulahoop Mon 01-Jul-19 15:54:00

I don't like Jeremy vine doing what was Mathew Wright show .What did he say about older people HM 999 ?

Hm999 Mon 01-Jul-19 14:52:15

I quite like Stephen Fry. We have all the Harry Potter books on Audible which he reads, and like them. Sadly Jeremy Vine is arguably the only person on TV and radio who send me straight to the off switch - the things he has said about older people (of which he is one!) are just horrible.

Vivian123 Mon 01-Jul-19 14:35:09

If they were all incredibly knowledgeable, they wouldn't have Alan Davies!

Whingingmom Mon 01-Jul-19 12:49:12

Do people really genuinely believe people on QI are so incredibly knowledgeable? It’s blatantly all scripted!!

Skye17 Mon 01-Jul-19 12:43:15

Saggi I also read The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists when I was 15. I was an agnostic till my late 20s. Then I started looking into Christianity and realised there was a lot I hadn’t known. I wanted to know what was true so I looked for answers to all my questions and objections, mainly through books. Three years I felt I had enough answers and I became a Christian.

I can recommend this process to anyone.

clareken Mon 01-Jul-19 12:16:52

Justme67 It is Giles Brandeth.

Justme67 Mon 01-Jul-19 11:57:11

I too love to listen to Stephen Fry, and wish he was back on QI. He has a way of speaking which makes you think he knows everything, which he surely cannot, but then again who knows? I can also listen to Giles B.... can never remember is surname, but love his sense of humour.

Saggi Mon 01-Jul-19 11:44:30

I downloaded ‘Mythos’ on Audible...brilliant ...but then I love Stephen Fry....and since I’m an avid reader, but two eye ops in last 18 months has incapacitated me in the reading dept. i started using Audible. I’m bit addicted to the app now. Just listened to ‘The Ragged Trousered Philanthropists’...realise now I read it when I was about 15...it’s the book they made me an atheist.!

lemongrove Mon 01-Jul-19 11:30:10

Tilly ???????????

Tillybelle Mon 01-Jul-19 11:21:04

I have trouble reading Stephen Fry's books because I hear his voice saying them. It puts me off rather than enhancing the content. Shouldn't do that but it does.

I like the Greek myths, but I don't like Fry being regarded as the All-Clever person to go to for having the last word on things! I do find him pompous and he does like to show off. He is always trying to prove that Christianity is false and God is evil but deliberately misinterprets the Bible or ignores huge parts of it. I find him frustrating. But then if people want to listen to him... that's their choice. If they really want to know more about something though they could study it and get the benefit of Teachers who spend their life researching the subject and really know about it.

I also find Brian Cox irritating! The BBC use him as if there is nobody else with any science knowledge, especially regarding Space!

HannahLoisLuke Mon 01-Jul-19 11:15:25

Are you referring to SF on Jeremy Vine's radio programme?
I listened to it. Don't mind either of them and am really enjoying Mythos, SFs book on Greek mythology. I've always loved the Greek myths but he really brings them to life.
Jeremy's ok, a bit needy sometimes but aren't all performers.

Craftycat Mon 01-Jul-19 11:10:59

I've just read Stephen Fry's book on Greek Myths that they were discussing. It is brilliant & very funny in places. Mind you - like him- I have always been fascinated by these stories.
I hope to see his show if it comes near here on tour.
