Grammar, the difference between knowing your shit and knowing you're shit.

I had to laugh at myself, Chestnut
As I read the hangman's words, I was thinking, hanged, not hung grin

Bathsheba Wed 27-Nov-19 21:52:54

Brilliant, both of them ???

gmarie Wed 27-Nov-19 22:49:01

Loved both!! I'm a bit embarrassed to say that, when I was trying a few online dating sites a few decades ago, one of my criteria for disqualifying a potential date was his misuse of your/you're; their, there, they're; or its/it's! blush

When I did substitute teaching, going over the distinctions between these homonyms was a key lesson that I kept in reserve. I hoped to reach every student in California! grin

Love these, thank you!

Was visiting a neighbour’s little boy in hospital yesterday. He came off traction -broken elbow-we finally persuaded him into a wheelchair to see before and after x-rays to prove his elbow is better, to see 3 drawers labelled “for stationary use only”! I said I’m pleased they’re better medics than grammarians-think quite a few didn’t understand!

Grannybags Thu 28-Nov-19 08:58:16

My husband has just asked me why I'm laughing!

Brilliant, thanks everyone!

gmarie I have 5 adult children and no matter how often it's explained one of them STILL regularly uses "your" when she means "you're". It drives me bonkers and I invariably "remind" her about it. She maintains her error is compounded by predictive text which perpetuates her mistake.
I do wonder if this is possible, or if it's just a convenient excuse.

Chestnut Thu 28-Nov-19 09:31:39

Predictive text is always blamed for spelling and grammar errors, including on these boards. That may be sometimes be true but more often than not it's just laziness, i.e. not bothering to check what you've written before posting.

I'd be the same, GMarie. Such things really grate on me.

Cartoons are brilliant - thanks for posting!

After he retired, dh took on the role of treasurer for our residents' association.
He showed me his first accounts sheet to send to everybody - it was headed by the previous treasurer (by then having moved elsewhere), 'Residence Association'.

I positively cringed. Dh said he'd noticed but hadn't bothered to change it, since he didn't think anybody else would notice or be bothered.

I thought that at least some definitely would and made him change it. I couldn't bear to have anyone thinking he couldn't see what was wrong!

Grammaretto Fri 29-Nov-19 23:13:51

Love the cartoons too!
Ooh yes the Residence would have bothered me. Witzend
It's like being pitch perfect, I believe, and if you hear a duff note it causes pain.
