Lurkers' Week: What common misspelling drives you crazy?

There is much consternation at GNHQ over the misuse of loose and lose. Although we do have to confess to always having to spellcheck broccoli blush.

We also object to things being spelt the American way (realize instead of realise).

Over to you!

I have no problem with misspelling or poor grammar (I have been guilty of it myself!), however one thing which makes me grind my teeth is ect instead of etc!

I have just remembered being on an internet "chat" last week with a Talk talk employee who requested that I "bare" with him.
Though I'm sure he didn't have access to my webcam I still declined.

Tow the line.

Every time I hear someone pronounce an emphatic "definAtely" I can't help seeing the word in my minds eye and shudder.
It DEFinitely should be stamped out.

Here we go again! I’ll go to bed now and leave all you superior posters to indulge your somewhat warped shaming.

Pretty nasty if it was tucked away where only the smug could read it but as it’s “Trending” it will warn poor spellers that they are not acceptable to GN and the administrators.

Seen on a local Buy/Sell Facebook page:
Chester draws
I nearly choked!

Grr...

I haven't trawled through the whole thread, but felt I would BURST if I didn't say my pet hate right now is Meters (to do with gas and electricity) instead of Metres (which is about distance, as in keep 2 metres apart..

What's not to understand?

AllatSea48 Mon 04-May-20 13:04:20

Incorrect use of "brought" instead of "bought".
"Pacific" instead of "specific"!
"Would of" instead of "would have"! Heard all too often, but also I have seen this howler in print in the local newspaper! Shame on the illiterate journalist.
Overuse of the word "amazing"!

Petera Mon 04-May-20 12:36:50

...but the incorrect use of 'epicentre' gets me every time.

Re comments on never qualifying 'unique': I understand that 'very unique' is pointless, but there's nothing wrong with 'almost unique'

Advice and advise are frequently muddled. Then there is the ever present - I was sat.

'brocolli' for 'broccoli'.

Especially if it's on a menu. If you're writing a cafe or restaurant menu you should check that everything is spelled correctly.

I've noticed several family messages complaining about lodes of homework.....

Bear and bare, some of the outcomes from using the wrong one doesn't bear thinking about.

Kestrel Fri 01-May-20 14:35:00

'then' instead of 'than' (eg something is 'better then something else' grrr - I assume it's because you don't have to reach so far on the keyboard to type 'e' rather than 'a' lol

I did enjoy " Californian wall nuts" the other Christmas in Salisbury.

Muddling allowed and aloud is a pet hate of mine which is frequently seen on FB
As Jane10 says draws and drawers.
My friend always types throught instead of thought and salard not salad in texts. I'm too polite to tell her.
