I know less now than I did when I was young ! How did that happen ?
So is it stripy or stripey ? What do you write ?
I must admit I don’t write this word often. I would probably use ‘striped’ but my 3 year olds showed me their new book about stripy socks and it didn’t look right to me. Google wasn’t much help. Which one do you think is correct in the UK ?

Whisky is Scottish and Whiskey is Irish.

Whisky or whiskey?
?

I’d go for stripey. Otherwise it looks like strippy.

Occasionally watch Gemporia and TJC and have seen both ‘smokey quartz’ and ‘smoky quartz’ items. I’d use the ‘e’ myself.

In UK English spelling 'stripey' is 'correct'. (My US spellcheck doesn't like it, though. ? ) Though, TBH, 'stripy' is phonetically correct too.

Actually, my spellcheck doesn't like either version, neither are in its dictionary. Which makes me realise that the more usual adjective is 'striped'

Definitely stripey

My Shorter Oxford Dictionary gives a-wry (and compares it with aright, as in did I hear you aright?) and stripy.

Oh no. I write nosey as well !

Starblaze Sun 26-Jul-20 15:24:24

I would say stripey out loud but no idea how it should be written...

Striped? lol

MissAdventure Sun 26-Jul-20 15:23:19

I kind of thought that was the 'rule'.
Icy, nosy, and stripy.

rockgran Sun 26-Jul-20 15:17:19

..."simply" is an adverb.

rockgran Sun 26-Jul-20 15:14:18

To make an adjective from words ending in e just drop the e and add the y.
Icy, Spicy, Nosy, Stripy. .....simply!

Not a clue yggdrasil ! ?
My grandchildren came home with a free book from nursery . We love books but the tale of the stripey sock left me cold.

Thanks everyone. I’m going to stick with the e version.

'Stripey to the Rescue' by Ivy Wallace.

Callistemon Sun 26-Jul-20 11:53:45

awry Bathsheba is correct

yggdrasil I knew I'd heard of Stripey before somewhere.
You must have a better memory than me!

yggdrasil Sun 26-Jul-20 11:50:44

Stripey was the zebra who lived on Timothy's shelf along with
Woeful the monkey, Getup the giraffe, Gumpa the bear and Little Mut.

Anyone know what I am talking about :-)

Bathsheba Sun 26-Jul-20 11:49:20

I notice people pronouncing "awry" as "a -wry".

I was taught and the dictionary agrees that it is "awe-ry"

I don't understand that. Why would you pronounce it 'awe-ry'? The word is nothing to do with awe, as in wonder. It comes from the word 'wry' which means crooked or skewed. It should be pronounced a-wry.

grandtanteJE65 Sun 26-Jul-20 11:23:52

I have always written stripey both of socks and cats.

I suspect stripy is American usage, but don't know for sure.

What do you think?
