kali2 this IS pedants corner after all - this kind of thread is especially created so that people with no interest in petty pedantry don't need to waste their short lives on it.
We like being pedantic.
(how many ways can you pronounce pedantic?)

I'd say life is far far too short, and so full of real problems.

It's far too short to read threads on topics that don't interest you, and take the trouble to comment.

My latest pet hate is words ending in -ing pronounced as if they end in -in. Priti Patel does this, as does one of the BBC health correspondants. So do many Lancastrians.

It’s true but I’m trying not to let my life be ruined by the fact that I’ve always said appree-see-ate and nego-see-ate and it’s evidently wrong! ??

Draws instead of drawers
Draw ring instead of drawing
Loranawdah instead of law and order

Why do they put in an r where there is none and miss one out when it's there?

For me its 'te' or 'ta' (or a similar noise) instead of to.
"I'm going te start here" - yes the little word 'to' is almost lost in spoken English but 'te' is just lazy.
I even noticed prince William using it the other day, I hope he doesn't pass it on 'te' his children.
I think he intended 'te' attend a fund raising event.

grandtanteJE65 Thu 13-May-21 13:56:56

sorry, ni-go'shi-ate obviously!

grandtanteJE65 Thu 13-May-21 13:56:19

Chamber's dictionary states that negotiate is pronounced nu-go'-shi-ate. I fondly imagine that is how I pronounce it, but I may be wrong.

Can’t stand harASSed or harASSment, American style. Please just say harassed.
And the Beth woman on BBC news who never pronounces her ‘t’s to sound down with the kids? Just makes her sound stupid.

NotSpaghetti Tue 11-May-21 19:57:33

Katek I hate "for free" too - and also "on sale" (meaning in the sale).
I suppose this isn't really pronunciation though - it's use of language ("bear me a minute" and "the proof is in the pudding" being other things I'm hearing a lot).

The one that grates on me is the grunt at the end of words, particularly when it follows a glottal stop. Nobody in Soapland is ever pregnant - they are always pregnun'uh, for instance.

There is a family on Gogglebox who do this all the time - the one with the knitting mum and the dad who stood as an MP or something a while ago. They all do it at the end of every sentence uh.

Calvary instead of cavalry.

Lorenorder instead of 'Law and Order' (so sorry LauraNorder, nothing personal you understand ?)

Where is she by the way ?

AngieA463 Tue 11-May-21 15:05:02

1. Ath-er-letes
2. Med-sin
3. The emphasis on thousand or million when stating an amount, eg. two hundred and fifty THOUSAND people.

Mollygo Tue 11-May-21 10:58:55

My pet hates are drawring and sore it for saw it.
Research: there’s been some ree-search on that, but I’m going to research the findings for myself.
Contribute-either way depending on what I’m saying. e.g. Did you conTRIbute to the gift? I’m going to CONtribute today. I think it’s to do with making a CONtribution. It’s a bit the same with distribute.
I think I say conTROversy, but after I’ve muttered all the others to myself, I’m confused.

grandmajet Sat 01-May-21 21:03:35

Shtoopid instead of stupid, like Maria in Coronation Street.

Katek Sat 01-May-21 20:52:05

“For free” drives me mad! . It seems to be everywhere on tv and social media

Isn't it jewellery? I've always pronounced it as jewlLEry. Of course I may well be wrong.
My Dad always said redchester for register. It always grated on me, but he was my Dad so I never corrected him.

I believe it's pronounced Jewelry with the stress on the first syllable.
I know we write it jewellery in the uk.

Amberone Sat 01-May-21 17:55:28

Calvary instead of cavalry.

Lorenorder instead of 'Law and Order' (so sorry LauraNorder, nothing personal you understand ?)

Patsy70 Sat 01-May-21 17:12:44

‘Secretry’ instead of ‘secretary’.

grannyrebel7 Sat 01-May-21 17:10:28

I agree with Jillybird very annoying! My DH says went instead of gone! For example when watching Pointless he says "I would've went for .... Drives me crazy! He's an educated man too and was a Deputy head. He's from the Welsh valleys so I think it's something to do with that maybe.

Deedaa Sat 01-May-21 16:38:01

I'm another one driven mad by people saying CONtribute instead of conTRIBute and there are several other words where the emphasis is always stressed. Still I've managed over 25 years with my American SiL and almost trained him not to say Nucular and Aluminum!

grannysyb Sat 01-May-21 16:28:30

Therilling instead of thrilling, also a very annoying ad for a car which be petrow or diesel, people can't seem to pronounce l.

Atqui Sat 01-May-21 16:21:00

Sorry about typos.

Atqui Sat 01-May-21 16:20:41

As Imread the first few posts ,I thought of Turmeric , then someone mentioned it first. I don understand why people leave out the R.
