A survey has revealed the most irritating mispronounced words:

Oh yes! "Can I get?" in cafes and restaurants drives me mad. I'd love to hear the server reassure them with, "Relax! It's my job. I'll get it for you!"

It's not really a mispronunciation but I have to smile at the way the Americans pronounce "mirror".

Bugalry instead of burglary

Reading this thread from the beginning has been quite an education and has challenged some of my own pronunciations.
A very “far back” voice often misses out bits of words, I’m thinking around the time of Noel Coward, when a clipped accent gave rise to many of the words quoted in this thread.

A close friend finds some things “heart rendering”?

Saying "birfday" for birthday! I thought surely someone will bring this to his attention, but years passed and our TV weather man (who did it on a regular basis) never changed his ways. I finally became so incensed that I called the TV station and gave them what for. I mean, really.

Kryptonite

This is not a criticism, but Scottish people pronounce words like 'doses' as 'dosees'. I would love to know if this is a regional thing within Scotland.

They do?
I've never heard that.

Kiwigramz Thu 24-Jun-21 20:29:42

Broadcasters telling the time saying its “nine (minutes) past ten” . Nine what past ten?

Kryptonite Thu 24-Jun-21 20:03:44

"I'm going to get a shower."
"We've already got one."

Someone close to me said 'anals' instead of 'annals' at the place of work! Again, if you are not familiar with the terminology...

magshard20 Thu 24-Jun-21 18:59:36

Hate it when I hear someone in a shop say " can I get" instead of "can I have". My son does it and it drives me mad.......he also says he's writ something instead of written......where did I go wrong, or is it just that I'm old??

Prostrate gland (should be prostate) and
Masectomy (should be mastectomy)

Cymres1 Thu 24-Jun-21 18:31:57

Mischeevious... that's a strangling offence in my opinion. Drives me nuts.
Sangwiches, foilage for foliage, and the noted one of someone academic I used to know who used Pacific in lectures she gave instead of specific, oh boy! That used to lose the students because they were so amazed at her coming out with it.
On the Cape Wrath issue, I was under the impression that it was a "wroth" sound, as in the hymn and novel The Grapes of Wrath. Funny how the English language can do strange things to what I thought was originally Norse.

lizzypopbottle Thu 24-Jun-21 18:04:25

I think some mispronounced words are simply due to a lack of knowledge. If you have little knowledge of male internal anatomy, you will make what sense you can of the name of the prostate gland, hence prostrate. It's a bit like the crazy interpretation of song lyrics. The actual lyrics can be quite different from what you think you've heard.

Kryptonite Thu 24-Jun-21 18:00:03

Raspberry emphasising the 'p'.

Kryptonite Thu 24-Jun-21 17:55:25

Har_ass_ment (emphasis on second syllable) instead of the correct harassment (emphasis on first syllable).
