A survey has revealed the most irritating mispronounced words:

NannanTo4 Thu 24-Jun-21 12:42:12

Boris and Hancock using ‘t’instead of to.
Drives me up t’wall

Lucca Thu 24-Jun-21 12:34:12

Damn. But still

Lucca Thu 24-Jun-21 12:33:42

Yammy

Math as a plural for maths

That’s not mispronunciation surely, it is just the American usage. I realise there’s massive anti American feeling in GN. Ut still….

I had thought it was from a cricketing analogy but my local garage man always says ' I did it off my own back. Is that ok,?'

My mother has always said "tatics" for "tactics" which drives me mad. However, I cannot for the life of me remember how to pronounce "integral". Is it "Inter-gral," "In-tee-gral" or "Int-egg-ral"? My husband laughs every time I have to use the word because I struggle with it. My son also gets irritated when I say, "Theatre" because I pronounce it "Thee-et-er" instead of Thea-ter." Most of the words I mispronounce are because I was reading words I'd never heard spoken when I was a young child. I didn't actually know about phonics so I took a guess at what they said and the mispronunciations in my head, stuck!

People who say "think" in place of "thing" as in
"I can't think of anythink to do"
surprisingly common.

Growing0ldDisgracefully Thu 24-Jun-21 12:28:35

Choclate for chocolate.
Somethink for something. Or even suthink for something?! (I have a friend who uses both of those!).
And how about Nigella Lawson's pronunciation of microwave???

Aepgirl Thu 24-Jun-21 12:24:41

Sarfnoon for ‘this afternoon’. Prostrate for prostate. But I think the best, and funniest (even though it is also sad) was when my friend told me that her daughter had had a vasectomy

Grannynannywanny Thu 24-Jun-21 12:23:36

Crect for correct

LinkyPinky Thu 24-Jun-21 12:21:20

Wander instead of wonder and vice-versa. AYEbiza.

HillyN Thu 24-Jun-21 12:18:28

In Bristol the local dialect adds an 'l' to the end of any word ending with a vowel. I had a long argument with my (Bristolian) DH before he would accept that 'idea' was a real word! He'd said 'ideal' all his life and thought Ideal Milk was so named because it was a good ideal to drink it.
He can never pronounce 'crisps' either and asks for a packet of 'crisp' or 'crips'. I have to say that mispronounced words don't irritate me though, I just want to giggle!

Imeegitly for immediately drives me nuts and I’m with you Pammiel on normalcy. I hate it angry
But enjoying having so little to worry about today smile

homefarm Thu 24-Jun-21 12:04:43

"Northern Island", I always say which one. Broadcasters are the worst for this one. I always thought there was an r in it

FarNorth Thu 24-Jun-21 12:04:12

pinkym gringringrin
Lots of lolz.

FarNorth Thu 24-Jun-21 12:00:43

Many of them say can’t be asked.
grin
I expect they like it when you explain, tho.

FannyCornforth Thu 24-Jun-21 11:56:41

Moggycuddler

Arthuritis, though another gran posted it. Labrinth for labyrinth. Vunnerable for vulnerable. And draws for drawers.

How does one pronounce 'labyrinth'?
Is the y sounded?

lizzypopbottle Thu 24-Jun-21 11:55:03

Create is so often pronounced cuh-rate or crate.

Yammy Thu 24-Jun-21 11:50:22

I taught in an area that said while instead of until e.g, wait while Friday instead of wait until.
This isn't a wrong pronunciation but really irritates me from my own area they say someone has "Sugar "when they mean Diabetes.

Pammie1 Thu 24-Jun-21 11:49:14

I absolutely hate the Americanisation ‘normalcy’ for normality.

Moggycuddler Thu 24-Jun-21 11:46:47

My brother, his entire life, has said the word "can't" as "caint." Don't know why.

Pammie1 Thu 24-Jun-21 11:46:40

@Spinnaker. Oh God yes, this. I hate it being used in speech but it’s even worse written down.

Ali08 Thu 24-Jun-21 11:45:38

Oh that 'haitch' instead of 'aitch' drives me nuts!!
As does 'sumfink', 'somethink', there's a 'G' on the end!!!!

Semiruralgirl Thu 24-Jun-21 11:42:05

Grannynannywammy - how do you pronounce ‘sixth’? Do you pronounce the ‘x’ or not? I don’t like it when when the ‘x’ is missed out and people say ‘sith’.

I don’t like it when people say ‘of off’ or is it ‘off of’? Or when an ‘r’ is added on the end of a word which ends in a vowel, and lots of other mispronunciations too!

TanaMa Thu 24-Jun-21 11:37:08

A friend's father used to say 'marygold' instead of marigold and I am not sure I can spell how he said
tuberculosis - tubercolorocus.
My dear Mum always said fruneral and pimrose.
