A survey has revealed the most irritating mispronounced words:

The "n" in the last line should, of course, be "in". The perils of the spell-checker accepting any single letter as valid (not that it could do otherwise).

My daughter in law says her favourite flowers are nasturniums.

Living in North London our children grew up with the dialect "should of" instead of "should have" (done something, for instance) syndrome.

It was bad enough when it was spoken but I have also seen it written quite frequently.

The worst example I came across was in a Nivea advertisement on the Tube! I can't remember the exact details - it wasn't "should of" but something along the same lines, such as "could of",

One wonders whom they employ as copy-writers, editors and printers that it got through to actually being put up n the Tube carriages!

Fanny Cornforth RP has been delivered from on high directly to our gracious Queen.
The best thing you can do is listen to at least one Royal speech per day and practise constantly.

Joolery instead of jewellery

Axed instead of asked

-in' instead of -ing at the end of a word. Priti Patel, I'm lookin' at you ?.

I am so glad Kate1949 that I am not alone in been driven mad by the recent trend of pronouncing assume as ashume.
I always want to ask how these people pronounce assumption.

Thank you Grannynannywanny
It all makes perfect sense now. ?

Can someone now please explain from where, or whom, one can receive Received Pronounciation?
It may come in handy

Can someone please explain who Mrs Banner is?
Thank you!
Fanny I fink she’s probaly a joggraphy teacher who doesn’t have a garridge for her mo-or.

One night she she decided to have a bahrth before bed. She went to drawer the curtains and noticed a bad smell coming from the bahrthroom. To her surprise, she opened the draw and found the cabb-ahje she’d bought last week. It was the sickth day it had been missing and she’d ashumed she left it in the shop. ?

^Standard English/Received Pronunciation is the same all over the country. Local accents don’t come into it.^

You really think everyone in England should aspire to RP?

Even if you do think that, GN is for more than England so it's quite rude to claim that non-RP is wrong.

I didn’t say that. I’m talking facts. RP is the same all over England.

FannyCornforth Thu 24-Jun-21 05:50:59

GrandMattie I love that cabb - ahje!

I admit that I probably say draw instead of drawer.
If I say draw- er it sounds daft...confused

grandMattie Thu 24-Jun-21 05:46:53

When I first cam to England, a boyfriend persuaded me that cabbage was pronounced the same way as garage - cub-bah-je/ga-rah-je…. ?
I can’t stand draw instead of drawer; lie-bry instead of library…

FannyCornforth Thu 24-Jun-21 05:40:56

Re Mrs Banner - is it something to do with the Incredible Hulk, aka Bruce Banner? confused

^Extorionate rather than Exorbitant turns me into Mrs Banner.^

Gosh, I've never come across that one, it sounds absurd confused

Can someone please explain who Mrs Banner is?
Thank you!

I did have elocution lessons at school but I don't think the word garage was mentioned at all.
Cows and brown etc

It’s more bahth than barth. Some people would pronounce the r!

You're right on that one.
As a Scot, I think it's totally weird to put an 'r' into a word expecting that no 'r' is to be said.

By ‘all over the country’ I mean England. Scotland, Ireland and Wales are different countries and have their own accepted pronunciations.
