A survey has revealed the most irritating mispronounced words:

KIL-o-metre, not Kil-OM-metre. How do you pronounce 'centimetre'? It's not like 'thermometer', which is something that does the measuring, not the measure itself.

Jullery for jewellery.
Chimley for chimney.
Ect for etc -- et cetera.
Defiantly for definitely.
Aks for ask.

Him Indoors says 'serieses' instead of just 'series' and it drives me bonkers!
He also says 'you'll get wrong' which I said as a child (it's a Geordie thing) but my mum corrected me til it stuck, "You don't get wrong, you get told off!"
Haitch, NO, it's AITCH!!
Anythink/somethink, oh if you just knew how many times I correct my DGC!
Ect instead of etc.
Will you itch me? OH GRRRRR!!

Bark instead of Bach (as in JS)

My all time annoyance, tumeric instead of turmeric, even more irritating when a chef does this.

One doesn’t use the term “geo-politics” so am unable o advise on its pronunciation.

MaizieD Fri 31-Dec-21 14:07:30

How does one pronounce geo-politics, then? hmm

JulieNoted is correct in that the 'e' is usually a marker for a 'soft' 'g' but with English being a mongrel language there are always exceptions. How about 'get'? grin

Blossoming Fri 31-Dec-21 13:58:40

JulieNoted

Joggraphy is the correct pronunciation of geography. The 'e' is to indicate that the 'g' is soft, it is not meant to be pronounced. Just the same as the name George. I'm sure no-one says Gee-orge wink

We are vindicated fellow joggraphy lovers grin

I say joggraphy and thea-ter. How do others pronounce it?

I also say gararjh ?

I hear myself saying joggraphy too, but as a child I remember being corrected and told that the word is gee-ogg-raphy.

I haven't met many schoolchildren who pronounced it like that, and histry instead of history is fairly usual (but incorrect) as well.

Last week, according to a commentator, Great Britain were sick in the Olympics medals table. What a mess that must have been.

I learnt English for commercial correspondence and my grammar book states the following as correct for dating in texts.

"The goods were dispatched on the 22nd May"

or

"The goods were dispatched on the 22nd of May"

or "The goods were dispatched on 22nd May"

The 'of' is not necessary. Nor is the 'the'. I don't think that nowadays we bother about the 'st/nd/rd/th' either.

For dating of letters:
London, 12th July or London, 12 July

ixion

Omission of of in dates- e.g.

Ninth June
23rd December

Is this an Americanism?

No, because the Americans put the month first. (e.g. April first, and the legendary May the Fourth)

Would of instead of would have.

Text talk, can’t stand it, it takes longer to read or decipher it than it would to have written it properly in the first place! Hello

People who mix up bought and brought.
Ditto borrow and lend.
As in " I borrowed him £10" instead of lent.
Drives me nuts!

When my daughter was very little, she’d confuse the two until I told her that “ I bringed the thing daddy buyed”. She got it after that!
“can I get…” no, no no!!!
