This one really irritates me as it makes no sense. People say I stan this actress or person.

I love the photo of your Stan foxie48 for as for using the word in the way described - well I won’t be.

Oh well, you learn something (probably useless) every day.

FannyCornforth Tue 08-Feb-22 04:46:34

Yep.it’s 22 years old

FannyCornforth Tue 08-Feb-22 04:43:57

welbeck grin
Foxie your Stan is a cracker.
I had a much missed ginger cat called Stanley. I got him from the Cat Protection, where he very much chose me.
I remember making DH stand guard over his pen in case anyone else tried to nab him while I did the paperwork!

Re the ‘Stan’ of the op. The Eminem song from where it originates is probably around 20 years old, so I doubt if the kids even know where it’s from.
It’s a funny old world (innit)

do you move in circles where it is common currency ?
if so, step away to avoid irritation.
or else get down wiv da yoof.
none of the rest of us have ever heard of it, so ignorance is bliss.

I’ve never heard of it either. Must be an age thing.

This is spooky! This afternoon in Asda they were playing 'Thank you' the song by Dido, which Eminem sampled for 'Stan'. All the way home and for most of the afternoon 'Stan' was my constant earworm! I had just got rid of it and now its back!!! I've not heard or thought of this song for years and the first thread I read tonight was this one! Anyone any advice on getting rid of earworms? smile smile

Don't think I'll bother with stan.
Stan the dog is gorgeous however.

BBbevan Mon 07-Feb-22 20:05:04

Stan by your man! ?

muse Mon 07-Feb-22 18:33:50

I had to google it too Sharon103. I do use Twitter occasionally, but have never come across the word.

The song "Stan," was about a violent and obsessed fan of Eminem, called Stanley "Stan" Mitchell. After getting no replies to his fan letters he becomes threatening and suicidal.

It's used as a noun and Stan Culture was and still is thought of as dangerous and toxic.

Fortunately, stan seems to have been toned down now when used as a verb. It is to show that you really like someone or devoted to them.

Marmite32 Mon 07-Feb-22 17:38:28

I thought it meant country/ land. eg Afghanistan, Kurdistan, Pakistan etc.

crazyH

As in “I cannot stand this weather “ ? “ I cannot bear this weather” ? Just wondering …

No, quite a different invented meaning. Slang.

AmberSpyglass Mon 07-Feb-22 10:18:46

Yes, it’s pretty common on social media (like Twitter or TikTok, not Facebook where the oldies hang out!). It’s just a way of showing your enthusiasm for something.

tanith Mon 07-Feb-22 09:58:18

My Dad was Stan, I’ve never heard it used as such as described.

henetha Mon 07-Feb-22 09:56:28

My best friend's husband was called Stan.
There are some strange words around these days.

Witzend Mon 07-Feb-22 09:52:24

My dog is called Stan, I am his biggest fan, so I guess I stan Stan! tbh I have never heard of it before, clearly need to get on twitter (or not).

❤️ your Stan!

Foxie, your Stan is a cutie! We have a similar piggie for our dog, and it is the noisiest toy ever.

Blossoming Sun 06-Feb-22 20:55:31

You don’t see it on Twitter, it’s all over TikTok where da yoof hang out grin

Jane71 Sun 06-Feb-22 20:50:22

Another one who has never heard of it: must be getting old and out of touch.

Pudding123 Sun 06-Feb-22 17:14:07

No,me neither!

Serendipity22 Sun 06-Feb-22 17:01:16

Never heard of it !!!

FannyCornforth Sun 06-Feb-22 15:50:10

If it helps, Stan is a portmanteau word of Stalker and fan.
Hence the ‘song’ by Eminem
Is this relevant OP?

FannyCornforth Sun 06-Feb-22 15:46:25

What on earth are you on about?
