It’s bad enough to read about reigning back ? but this is even worse

The same website yesterday referred to Prince Harry’s affinity with Mauri (sic) values.

When I read the question, I took 'Mauri' to be a person. Isn't there an 'Oprah-like' programme called 'Mauri'?

'Oh dear BBC'

Is the thread title the opening line of a letter to the BBC? ?

Caleo Wed 07-Sep-22 11:27:50

It's an interesting substitution of reigns for the more conventional reins. I understand the two have the same etymological root . Important regal personages are often portrayed controlling splendid horses by means of reins.

Great minds Shep!

Germanshepherdsmum Wed 07-Sep-22 09:11:17

I could do with some jaunty vibes and a co-ordinated footbed.

FannyCornforth Wed 07-Sep-22 09:10:48

And flaunt your (coordinating!) foot bed smile
Got to get that esthetical (sic)

MawtheMerrier Wed 07-Sep-22 09:05:16

Remember to roll up your bottoms

Allsorts Wed 07-Sep-22 07:04:25

Of course it's a play on words!?

It's nice to see that Nannagarra but sad to find myself so unexpectedly pleased!

I really don't like the way so many informative pieces on both TV and radio seem to end with rather corny "quips".
SO unnecessary. confused

I agree!
Really annoying and unnecessary.

Nannagarra Tue 10-May-22 20:08:43

The BBC is also guilty of non-agreement.

Finally a supermarket sign which doesn’t grate.

I’ve just heard the phrase, ‘end of the Keir show’ ?

JackyB Tue 10-May-22 12:02:19

The BBC (once the ultimate bastion of the English language) makes some toe-curling spelling mistakes on its website. Next time I see one I'll post a screenshot.

In this case though, I agree that the use of reigns instead of reins is a deliberate play on words.

Or did you think Keir Starmer should be "gambolling"!??!?!

Maori. I think NZealand is doing something woke if you look it up.

It's all to do with Harry's new sustainable travel campaign.

Sticking out his tongue and showily stomping about, you mean, anno?

It's a play on words in the original headline and then that headline is quoted. So what's the fuss? Such things used to be quite common in newspapers. Have we now reached the level of literacy where they are no longer appreciated?
But I don't get why it's the fault of the BBC.

Te Aka
Māori Dictionary

mauri
1. (noun) life principle, life force, vital essence, special nature, a material symbol of a life principle, source of emotions - the essential quality and vitality of a being or entity. Also used for a physical object, individual, ecosystem or social group in which this essence is located.

Much deeper than some of the waffle expressed by some.

FannyCornforth Tue 10-May-22 10:16:22

I’m ever so confused ?

Callistemon21 Tue 10-May-22 10:10:06

MawtheMerrier

Oops!??I thought it was a phonetic version of Māori which was used later in the paragraph! blush

Actually, if so, it's rather an insult to Māori values!

It looks like a play on words to me, too, Maw.

But what is 'Mauri' all about? I've no idea, please enlighten me.

Is it to do with Mauri values?
Ie spiritual values?
