That reminded me of when I was teaching English abroad, and once had to take someone else’s more advanced class. Topic for the lesson was the 3rd conditional.
Hadn’t a clue! Had to look it up in my trusty EFL grammar.
Of course it was a thing native speakers use without even thinking,
For those classes (largely Arabic speaking young males sent by their various govt. depts.). the usual method was this -
1st conditional - If I win the lottery I’ll buy a car.
2nd, If I won the lottery I’d buy a car.
3rd, If I had won the lottery, I would have bought a car.
So complicated for the poor learners!
