That's brilliant, I could send it to my darling GD (15) who has a framed print on her bedroom wall that says "I am silently correcting your grammar".

Or should that be "I am correcting your grammar silently" ??

Indeed it should be your second version, as you must NEVER split infinitives!

Of course, you know this, don't you?

I'd like a mug which says "I really love split infinitives"

In any case the ‘no split infinitives’ rule was dreamed up by (IIRC) 18th century grammarians who were trying to ‘regularise’ the English language. Their reasoning apparently was that since Latin (to them a ‘perfect’ language) can’t split their one-word infinitives, English shouldn’t split their two-word dittos either.

So as far as I’m concerned ‘to boldly go’ on splitting them is usually fine - unless it sounds clumsy. More often IMO it’s not splitting them that can sound clumsy.

No infinitive - just the use of the “continuous present” tense.
“I am correcting” as opposed to “I correct”

What infinitive? I can't see one! 😁

I thought you all might like this - it was a b-day card from a sister who’s a fully paid-up pedant, too. 🙂
