That's brilliant, I could send it to my darling GD (15) who has a framed print on her bedroom wall that says "I am silently correcting your grammar".
Or should that be "I am correcting your grammar silently" ??Indeed it should be your second version, as you must NEVER split infinitives!
Of course, you know this, don't you?I'd like a mug which says "I really love split infinitives"
In any case the âno split infinitivesâ rule was dreamed up by (IIRC) 18th century grammarians who were trying to âregulariseâ the English language. Their reasoning apparently was that since Latin (to them a âperfectâ language) canât split their one-word infinitives, English shouldnât split their two-word dittos either.
So as far as Iâm concerned âto boldly goâ on splitting them is usually fine - unless it sounds clumsy. More often IMO itâs not splitting them that can sound clumsy.
