I call them "Baked" potatoes but a friend calls them "Jacket" potatoes and further insists that referring to them as "baked" is a sign of being "common". Really?

I love a wonderful baked potato .. For us, it is un-important what they are called. They are delicious if roasted or baked to their correct texture.

I enjoy a Tsp. of Room temperature Asturian or French butter and a sprinkle of salt and black freshly ground pepper.

Though once in awhile, I also like "pizza toppings" inside the baked potato .. Mozzarella di buffala, Parmesano, anchovies, cherry tomatoes and olives or capers.

Fun once in awhile ..

And I think Dauphinoise basically is from the region where gratins were/are popular?
I'm not well up on where fancier names come from.

Interesting discussion. I thought that I have always called them baked potatoes but now that jacket potatoes have been mentioned I am not so sure. Jacket potatoes does ring a tiny bell from my childhood. I consulted Mr P and he insists on ^ baked^. Personally, I care not a jot so long as they are filled with something delicious.

Please don’t swear 🙏

Callistemon21 - I suppose creamed potatoes is a fancier name for what are what I'd call whipped potatoes.
grin

Always called them jacket potatoes and I m from a very working class background The menus around here call them jacket potatoes too
i too would expect a baked potato to be peeled and in the oven
A jacket potato has its jacket still on

Tell that to the 'baked potato' shops - never seen one yet which calls itself a jacket potato shop.

Here’s Wetherspoons 2024 menu

The ready prepared ones, never seen the point,McCain etc call them jacket potatoes.

Just looked it ypup:

Mashed potatoes - mashed with butter and a little milk, mashed with a potato masher

Creamed potatoes - ditto but processed for longer, perhaps with cream and mixed with an electric mixer.

I think they go too gloopy if over-processed.

For mash get Smash!

BlueBelle Tue 23-Jan-24 16:12:49

Creamed potatoes are posh mash aren’t they ?

My father always called them "Baked potatoes in their Jackets"

Surely, creamed potatoes are sliced boiled potatoes served in white sauce?

Nothing to do with mashed potatoes, at all.

I thought they were the same as mashed but a bit posher?

I have always said 'jacket'. To me 'baked' could apply to other potato dishes cooked in the oven.

But most people wouldn't call those dishes 'a baked potato'.

Baked potatoes need to be crispy and definitely cooked in an oven.. must get some nice large potatoes and relish being common.. what a perculiar woman she must be..

Callistemon21 Tue 23-Jan-24 14:59:34

Does that mean I have to log off and carry on with cleaning? And furniture moving?

Primrose53 Tue 23-Jan-24 14:58:41

Who cares what they’re called. As my son says “just wind it in.”🤣

Think we all must have too much time on our hands on this lousy day

It's a relief from cleaning 😃

Roast potatoes are roasted
Baked potatoes are baked
Mashed potatoes are mashed
Boiled potatoes.... Sautéed potatoes...
I think you get my drift! grin

Mashed potatoes are mashed

So what's the difference between mashed potatoes and creamed potatoes?

Personally, I prefer Dauphinoise Potatoes.
