Uptick

I too think uptick means increase.
My pet hate is back story. History has served us well for years.

I hadn't heard the word uptick before today!

The context I heard it in was ‘it looks like there will be an uptick in inflation’. I thought uptick was used in something positive. I would have used ‘increase’ as inflation is rarely good news.

Another word , which I'll avoid .
I tried to book a doctor's appointment and the receptionist said that she was throwing me into the mix .
I think that her twin sister works at the chemist .
I had such a convoluted conversation with her that I'm not actually sure what she said .
There are some expressions ,which have crept in and I dislike them :
At the end of the day.
Pushing the envelope.
Pop !

It does just mean increase. Just thought I'd 'push the envelope' on that or ' run it up the flagpole and see who salutes'!

I thought an "uptick" was an increase in something that, if plotted on a graph, would look like a tick sjgn. So something that was going down has now started going back up again. Rather descriptive I think.

Thought I'd get there in before the thread starts repeating the usual "would of/would have" grumbles.

I don’t like ‘grab’. Grab a coffee, grab a sandwich, grab a chair and so many recipes on Instagram implore us to grab absolutely everything.

That doesn’t matter, Tizliz as this is Pedants’ corner where we can complain freely about upticks or anything else. If we get the usual “language is always changing so get used to it” comments, we are quite entitled to huff, puff, and carry on complaining!

Is increase what uptick means? Well I've learned something. I thought it meant present and correct.

My hate is the ubiquitous 'pop'. I never pop things in the oven (put). I never add a pop of colour (splash) and I never pop anywhere (go or dash)
