This has probably been discussed before, but I cringe when people say "haitch" for the letter H.

In Edinburgh it can be ‘itch’!

My DH always said, ‘fry off’ until I Tod him the off was superfluous.
So, says he , what about ‘a fry up’. That’s part of the English language….

When I take over the world, one of my first edicts will be compulsory grammar lessons for anyone using 'should of' instead of 'should have'.

The second will be to listen to the News Quiz on R4 to get a humorous perspective on news and politics.

I hope you don't take over the world as I can't stand the news quiz.

Before I retired I was a professional editor. Every small error, both written and spoken, stands out like a flashing red light. It has taken me fifteen years to train myself to move past the errors and concentrate on the content. That bee in my bonnet is now buzzing less fiercely. No point in getting excited about things I cannot change, especially as I am as prone to mistakes as anyone else.

‘Can I get?’ instead of ‘can I have?’when ordering food/drinks.

I still remember in P3 our teacher telling us we must never use ‘get’, as there was always a ‘proper’ alternative. Even now, I can still find myself looking for a phrase in which only ‘get’ will do!

One pet hate of mine is the mispronunciation of amateur.
So many people drop the t and somehow cram in a ch, so the word ends up amachur.
I’ve even heard newsreaders say it.

What has the poor little letter t done that so many people seem determined to avoid saying it at all costs?!

^I am furious when people who know they are going to be interviewed on TV don’t bother with their appearance. I am obviously not talking about people interviewed after a disaster, for example, just people who have been invited onto something like ‘Breakfast’ on BBC to give a opinion^

Why on earth should that render you “furious”, ?

I’m not sure how to answer that! It just does! Probably because I’m old and crabby!

Yes, his hair was long, but very clean and tidy.
If you transpose his hair onto the image of a woman would you still say the hair was unkempt

Maybe it’s my tv (needs updating) but his hair looked rathe greasy to me, and certainly not tidy.
As for transposing the hair onto a woman etc,. I’m not sure I quite understood the question. Sorry.
In any event, I didn’t feel comfortable looking at hm.

I love the brummie accent. My friend is Welsh but lived most of her life in Birmingham, so mixture of the two. I could sit & listen to her all day long.

''Muzak'' instead of ''music'' grates my nerves no matter what accent it is!

Muzak and music are very different things.
Muzak is that “background” music shops, hotels, some pubs or restaurants etc seem to think we need presumably in case silence is too much to take.

I have lived here in Birmingham all my life. When we first moved to this part of Brum, which is near the Black Country, we couldn't understand a lot of what people were saying. We went to buy some paint and asked the assistant if they had a particular shade. She replied 'If it A on the shelf, we A gorrit'..

I went to live in the Black Country straight from Reading. I found it was so difficult to understand and it took me a while to get my ear in. The only dialects as difficult have been Kerry Irish and Geordie.

I got to love The Black Country Night Out and Dolly Allen

The one annoying me today is had went. The dog had went missing. I had went to the shops etc.Also where/were and lose/loose.
