Summer noise

Am I the only one who hates the summer? the noise drives me crazy. I totally understand that there are jobs and projects that can only be done in the fine weather, but there is no peace. Axle grinders, strimmers, lawn mowers, hedge trimmers and the children screaming. When I was young, and my girls, if we/they screamed we were told to stop it or come inside. There is no peace or relaxation and I am sick of the noise. I totally understand people sitting in their gardens and chatting, entertaining, but laughing, drinking , loud talking until after midnight??? Roll on Winter when the windows are closed, and the curtains drawn and I can be in my own space.

I've left you a message on the good morning thread Crossstichfan.

I'm wondering if the OP is possibly autistic? My grandson is autistic, among many other things and he cannot tolerate noise. It's painful to him.

Thank you for the flowers Allira

The noise and anti social behaviour is the reason I hate summer and especially light nights. I don't mind grass cutters, children playing etc....but I hate music in gardens.

Apologies to anyone I have offended. I was totally out of order and should have put my comment more kindly. Not like me, but given the birthday I have just had, I can put it down to old age 😂.
Seriously, I really am sorry.

Oops, I didn't see that post first.

Belated birthday greetings flowers
Sorry it was a bad day.

Gosh, that was harsh and unkind, Crosstitchfan 😯

Some days it's a bit noisy round here but at least it drowns out the noise of those flippin' pigeons!!

Elless Sun 17-Aug-25 15:15:43

We have purposely moved to a quiet close filled with 'older' residents hoping for a quiet life after living on a very busy road with children all around. Unfortunately one neighbour has the whole family round every Sunday, the children scream and shout until late when they go home. Take them to a playground or event for children - I don't want to listen to them and yes I am miserable.

Why is this in Pedants' Corner?? ! I'm a bit of a pedant but I LOVE summer and all its noises (apart from the boy racers on the nearby highways who insist on disturbing everyone in the early morning and late at night).

@Crosstitchfan, many threads start off with a good old moan about something, why have your guns trained on this OP?
I can be a grumpy old git sometimes but am sure am not alone in this.
As it is summer noises don’t bother me unless is constant drilling, but if someone lives in a built up area where there is excessive noise, this carries more easily on a hot day and I imagine can become irritating.
Maybe you have irritations that others wouldn’t agree with. Horses for courses.

Crossstitchfan Sun 17-Aug-25 14:31:29

Ran parallel to ‘OURS’, not ‘toys’!😂

I would welcome some restrictions on when all these machines may be used.

In my childhood no-body mowed a lawn on a Sunday, whether they went to church or not.

I am not saying we should revert to that, but surely it would be possible to have by-laws stating that power tools, including lawn-mowers, strimmers and hedge cutters may be used on week-day evenings until 9.pm and on Saturdays and Sundays after 2 p.m. With the amount of rain we are getting, grass cannot be mown in the morning.

And children can and should be taught not to scream and shout when playing and dogs taught not to bark at anything that moves!

Jaxjacky Sun 17-Aug-25 14:24:19

Think it is only you Fflaurie.
It makes a change to be warm enough and sit out late at night, rather continental!

whywhywhy Sun 17-Aug-25 14:21:15

I love the sounds of summer! At least we are not living in war torn lands. Too scared to breathe. Stop moaning!!!!!

Trisha99 Sun 17-Aug-25 14:19:11

I’m sorry Fflaurie but your comment made me laugh.
Come and live in a seaside town, then you’ll know noisy!
We’re at the quiet end of town but can still hear the funfairs and music, most of the time it’s like a soundtrack /background music but occasionally when the same tune is played for the umpteenth time it gets a bit irritating.
It does all stop dead at 10 pm though, and the silence can be a bit unnerving!

Greenfinch Sun 17-Aug-25 14:15:22

Unnecessarily harsh Crosstitchfan. The OP is entitled to say how she feels and has initiated an interesting discussion if nothing else.

Our neighbours with their children are away on holiday and we miss their happy voices. We are looking after their hamster but it is not the same!
Last night the farm opposite us had a “rave” but the noise was in the distance and the late night fireworks were beautiful.
We live on a main road and the traffic noise with the windows open can be disturbing but I find I don’t really notice it anymore.

Oh dear. I feel sorry for you. I don’t know what the answer is- a desert island, earplugs, move house? ?
I see that at the end, you say you are looking forward to when you can be in your own space. I find that a strange comment, but each to his own.
As I said, I feel sorry for you. You are clearly a loner and don’t like people. You are missing out on so much, whether you admit it or not.

Before we moved here we lived in a town house that had, large and lovely communal gardens going down to the Thames. Directly across the water was a rowing club and a pub, which played YMCA at chucking out timegrin There was always a noisy ambience in the gardens from summer entertaining, children playing out. There were the occasional complaints from some who could be intolerant of the children's noisy games, which always made me think "why are you living here then, an inter generational neighbourhood confused" It never bothered me. It's quieter where we live now, although plenty of children around. I enjoy the birdsong, I'm not bothered by children's noisy playing, they need to get out let off steam, they all spend too much time on screens anyway. My children had skateboarding and roller blading sessions outside one of our houses with their friends, skateboards can make a racket, my neighbours were tolerant of their gatherings. My only grouse here is probably, my next door neighbour's over use of the lawn mower, he appears to mow the lawn every quiet Sunday afternoon, he has a multitude of other garden gadgetry, strimmers, leaf blowers. I'm in the garden now, so far he, hasn't appeared grin Making the most of the calm. Unless you live in splendid isolation, it's to be expected.

All we hear here in Summer is cicadas. People are pretty quiet and our house has a lot of trees so you can’t really see much of the neighbours. We chose it for this, having had noisy neighbours in the past.

Fflaurie Sun 17-Aug-25 13:08:43

I do love to hear children playing, but not screaming, I love the sound of birds, but can't hear them for the noise of garden implements, and I do wear noise cancelling buds when I'm out there, I would simply love to sit in my garden listening to the birds in peace.

BlueBelle Sun 17-Aug-25 12:43:27

.
That sounds like the miserable existence many old people are trying to escape from 🤣
Are you neurodiverse Fflourie ? Maybe as farmgran suggested some noise cancelling headphones or put your own radio or music on
I love to hear kids in the summer we re not too far from a school and if I go for a walk I can hear all their happy shrieks I wish I was at school again having playtime without a care in the world
Lap it up winter will be here in a flash then we can all be miserable and quiet and stuck inside again

Kate1949 Sun 17-Aug-25 12:35:07

I love the summer. We are on the outskirts of Birmingham. You could hear a pin drop here today.

farmgran Sun 17-Aug-25 12:29:59

Perhaps you could wear noise cancelling headphones and muffle the noise!

When my husband was alive, we lived in a village, next door to a family with three young children. We didn’t know them well, only to pass the time of day with. A few weeks after they moved in, the dad came round to ask if the children playing in the garden was too noisy for us. (We were OAPs at that time, and their garden, although behind a tall wall, ran parallel toys. We told him, truthfully, that when we sat in the garden, we were more than happy to hear the children. It probably helped that they were well brought up children, as they never seemed to yell and scream at the top of their voices. It also helped that we had grandchildren who visited, so we were quite used to the sound of kiddies playing.

Parallel to ours, not parallel toys!
