Everyone is “doubling down” - it’s “in their DNA”

Is it the same as “ lean into”? Both are phrases I have come across just this week.

I don't think (despite Trump's incoherent rambling) that I have ever heard either of them use the phrase doubling down.
More like lazy media speak.

It means that you are doubly certain of something and you won’t be swayed otherwise. Kind of stubbornness where you won’t change your mind even if proved wrong. As oreo said.

I though it meant refusing to agree or to do something

I think ‘doubling down’ means more than just reiterating something- it’s more about being stubborn and refusing to listen to other points of view.

It’s just a phrase, and I expect most people understand what it means.

Doubling down has been around for years, hasn’t it? Or maybe it just feels that way! It just means emphasising/intensifying something.

As for the DNA quote, I’m reminded of my grandad, who’d say ‘I felt it in my water’. DNA must be the modern equivalent.

I think "doubling down" means "look - I just said it again!"

Yes, it's irritating. And may I add referring to Applications as merely Apps? A four syllable word isn't that difficult.

It really means defending their argument- usually for an ideological viewpoint.

In some contexts it can mean that they know something we don't, but also it can just be pig-headedness.

It’s on the news constantly. Keir Starmer doubles down on something. Then Trump doubles down. Everyone it seems is doubling down. Just listen.

I do go on fb WhatsApp’s and occassionally instagram but not come across anyone doubling up or down

I can’t understand why it’s doubling down and not doubling up? Although both equally silly.
