Have you heard this trailer (sorry) for the Olympics on BBC radio? The announcer ends it with 'Trails Will Blaze!!!' which sounds as though the writer thought that 'blazing a trail' had something to do with fire. I've just checked the origin of the phrase and it means cutting into the bark of a tree in a forest so as to expose the lighter wood beneath (the 'blaze') and thus mark a trail for people who come later to follow. Don't know why this annoys me so much. Perhaps the 'he-man' delivery makes it worse.

I just thought it was now used if someone is first to do something, creating a path for others - so like your meaning - cutting a notch to show the way,

"Trails will blaze" sounds ludicrous!

I heard someone today say they were going to offer a "simplistic" explanation and that made me grimace and wonder why anyone might want to do that!

Is that why they have all those mystifying flames advertising the Winter Olympics on BBC?

We thought it was very strange because they are about snow and ice!
