I keep seeing ‘media’ with a singular verb, but surely it’s plural?

"Media" is being used as a single entity lumping them all as one, hence 'the media is . . .'

I think I say the media are, and they aren’t all the same.
Originally ‘the news’ was plural but that’s long gone.
