Pedants' corner

Hating ‘on’ instead of just ‘hating’.

I’m happy for Americans to park up in their parking lots but why change the way we have always described things?
Even pronunciation has changed. I recently heard my grandson say invenTORY. He’s obviously got it from SM.

It is invenTORY confused
Do you say inVENTory?

No. I say INventry

Yes, Bellanonna, that's a noun and not what I'm complaining about, but I don't see why the verb 'to meet' needs an 'up' after it. smile

😅

As long as coffee or tea breaks don't become Hydration Breaks!

I think we’ve used “meet-up” as a noun for some time.

You just said what I was coming on the thread to say, Aveline! A similar one is 'meet up' instead of 'meet'. I hadn't come across 'hating on' or 'loving on' but no doubt they will turn up everywhere now. Why do these unnecessary expressions spread so quickly, when good grammar doesn't seem to make a big impression on those of us who are not proud to be pedants?

I’ve never heard of this.

Another Americanism. I dont understand 'parking up'. Why not just park?

I’m
Hoping I’ve not (inadvertently) used this expression! 🙄🙄

Another expression I have come across frequently recently is “loving on” so a similar thing.
It is only in American press that I have read it.
Another example of language evolving but I don’t like either expression and certainly won’t be using it.

Never come across this, but rather is like it.

I’ve never seen this.

So you hate hating on?

Witzend Tue 07-Jul-26 21:59:49

I’ve seen this twice in the past couple of days - in both cases the ‘on’ was completely redundant.
Is it another blasted import from across the pond?
