I am about to give a home to a brother and sister aged 6. The girl cat is all black and the boy black and white. Could I have name suggestions please ? Previous animals have been named using food or current singers' names, but any ideas are welcome..

numberplease! That's great - you're going to get a cat, and you've wanted one for ages!! If he's a rescue cat he should have been 'seen to' (?) so how about calling him Nuts (he's ginger but won't have the n..s)! 'NoNuts' wouldn't be a very nice thing to shout when you're looking for him! grin

millipede - talk about giving a dog a bad name! grin!
Chiron was a centaur in Greek mythology, so not really appropriate for a cat! Pushkin is rather posh but liable to be shortened to Puss!
I had a black cat called Sophocles (not my idea, his previous owner), shortened to Soppy!

Congratulations numberplease, I hope you enjoy your new companion. He will not care what you call him, so I would definitely change his name. There are websites with lists of names for the different colourings. I went for spice names for my brown spotted Bengal girls - Saffron and Nutmeg, maybe there is a masculine-sounding ginger coloured one like Pepper, Cinnamon or Curry! (sorry!) hmm

I`ll pass on Curry, rather like Pepper though. I did google Chiron, why they named him that I don`t know!

Same reason I called my goldfish Lysistrata I expect!

wotsamashedupjingl Thu 05-Apr-12 18:42:31

My last cat was called Fred.

I loved that little cat.

My cat is Spice!

But I have met a Pushkin and used to have one called Oedipuss.

What about Gran and Net

Gagagran Thu 05-Apr-12 21:32:26

There used to be a cat lived near me called Santa. (Claws!) I thought that was very clever!

Our last two were Otto and Clio. Both long gone now and still missed.

My first ginger cat was Orlando because as a child I simply loved the stories about Orlando the Marmalade Cat by Kathleen Hale - the illustrations were wonderful. My second ginger was, more mundanely, Sandy.

It seems to be fashionable to call pets by old man type names like Frank, Eric, Bert, Basil, Cyril and Fred. These would really suit a laid-back boy cat.

I think I may have mentioned before that my four youngest cats (now 15) were born in my office. As I work in publishing, they were named after fonts. The firstborn is Dingbat, although often called Fatty. Such a bonker puss, never was a cat beter named. Next is Helvetica Semi Bold who'd like to be big and brave but is a bit iffy about it and looks permanently guilty. Then there is my curvaceous serif girl, Bodoni, and her tiny litle sister, the runt of the litter, Frutiger Light Condensed. Their mother is called Fishpaste (a long story) but also answers to "Lady, Lady".

Some very funny names in this thread.

My first cat was called Stinky, because we overfed her and she had dreadful flatulence. She had one litter of kittens before we got her fixed, and kept one, which we called Little Pong.

My sister had a cat she called Euripides, because he was always ripping her tights with his claws (you rip o' dese tights one more time and you're dead)

Our last cat was Mao or Chairman Meeow to give him his full name.

Our previous cats were, Smoky, Sherry, Patch, Bonnie and Trixie, none of which will suit a ginger boy. Thinking now of Brandy or Shandy, but still like Pushkin.

Oxon70 Fri 06-Apr-12 09:05:26

Re the name Stinky, we had one called Pooh...

And a little pome, a very early one of mine:

Kittens have an air about them
They are born with instinks

Two kittens were to have Hobbit names, Merry and Pippin, but the black one didn't look like a Pippin (?) and was named Samwise (Sam). Merry met his fate on the road, but Sam, a laid back cat if ever there was one, lived on with his new companion, Sandy, the ginger.

Well, he`s here, and he`s beautiful! We toyed with the name Topaz, but have settled for Pepper. Will put his photo in my profile soon.

shysal Fri 06-Apr-12 18:00:32

Welcome to your new boy number, you have years of fun ahead of you, hope he will settle quickly. I look forward to seeing your photo. If you look at my profile you will see cat photos but none of me!

Annobel Fri 06-Apr-12 18:51:38

Lovely, number. Have fun getting to know him. smile

artygran Fri 06-Apr-12 20:34:02

Dandelion and Burdock!

jeni Fri 06-Apr-12 21:13:28

I'd love to have a cat, I think they are the most beautiful, sensual creatures!
Unfortunately, I have a very strong allergy to them!
So I can't!
Life is not fair! sad

numberplease Fri 06-Apr-12 21:44:10

Shysal, I`ve just had a look at your cats, they`re gorgeous! The three Bengals are so sleek, they seem to be saying "look how beautiful we are".
Pepper`s settling in fine, I`m pleasantly surprised. He`s eating OK, using the litter tray, and following me every time I get up!

greenmossgiel Fri 06-Apr-12 22:02:34

You'll be his mum now, number! Bless him! smile

Off to the vet shortly with Pepper, didn`t expect to be visiting a vet so soon into our new relationship. Poor thing appears to be constipated, hasn`t "been" since Saturday afternoon, keeps trying though. Hope constipation`s all that`s wrong.
