I am about to give a home to a brother and sister aged 6. The girl cat is all black and the boy black and white. Could I have name suggestions please ? Previous animals have been named using food or current singers' names, but any ideas are welcome..

I think I may have mentioned before that my four youngest cats (now 15) were born in my office. As I work in publishing, they were named after fonts. The firstborn is Dingbat, although often called Fatty. Such a bonker puss, never was a cat beter named. Next is Helvetica Semi Bold who'd like to be big and brave but is a bit iffy about it and looks permanently guilty. Then there is my curvaceous serif girl, Bodoni, and her tiny litle sister, the runt of the litter, Frutiger Light Condensed. Their mother is called Fishpaste (a long story) but also answers to "Lady, Lady".

It seems to be fashionable to call pets by old man type names like Frank, Eric, Bert, Basil, Cyril and Fred. These would really suit a laid-back boy cat.

My first ginger cat was Orlando because as a child I simply loved the stories about Orlando the Marmalade Cat by Kathleen Hale - the illustrations were wonderful. My second ginger was, more mundanely, Sandy.

There used to be a cat lived near me called Santa. (Claws!) I thought that was very clever!

Our last two were Otto and Clio. Both long gone now and still missed.

What about Gran and Net

My cat is Spice!

But I have met a Pushkin and used to have one called Oedipuss.

wotsamashedupjingl Thu 05-Apr-12 18:42:31

My last cat was called Fred.

I loved that little cat.

Same reason I called my goldfish Lysistrata I expect!

I`ll pass on Curry, rather like Pepper though. I did google Chiron, why they named him that I don`t know!

shysal Thu 05-Apr-12 18:02:40

Congratulations numberplease, I hope you enjoy your new companion. He will not care what you call him, so I would definitely change his name. There are websites with lists of names for the different colourings. I went for spice names for my brown spotted Bengal girls - Saffron and Nutmeg, maybe there is a masculine-sounding ginger coloured one like Pepper, Cinnamon or Curry! (sorry!) hmm

Annobel Thu 05-Apr-12 17:57:17

millipede - talk about giving a dog a bad name! grin!
Chiron was a centaur in Greek mythology, so not really appropriate for a cat! Pushkin is rather posh but liable to be shortened to Puss!
I had a black cat called Sophocles (not my idea, his previous owner), shortened to Soppy!

greenmossgiel Thu 05-Apr-12 17:55:55

numberplease! That's great - you're going to get a cat, and you've wanted one for ages!! If he's a rescue cat he should have been 'seen to' (?) so how about calling him Nuts (he's ginger but won't have the n..s)! 'NoNuts' wouldn't be a very nice thing to shout when you're looking for him! grin

wotsamashedupjingl Thu 05-Apr-12 17:46:59

"Chrion"? "Pushkin"? [confused.

You sure you want to bother changing it?

Give him something normal, like "Tibbles".

We are going to see a rescue cat tomorrow, with the idea of giving him a home. He`s a one year old ginger boy, rather beautiful judging from his photo. But, and it`s a big BUT, I don`t like his name, and am hoping that if we bring him home, he won`t mind me changing it. At the moment he`s called CHIRON? Not sure yet what I`ll change it to, but rather fancy Pushkin. Anyway, please wish me luck for tomorrow!

I have a friend who has just obtained two puppies...called them mayhem and chaos..good eh..

Congratulations grin The boy cat could be Zeberdie and the girl Zofie...or Zef and Zof for short. What a nice lady you are shysal. We have a wee family of feral cats call here most days. Rory [big male cat] sitting in our utility room, waiting for his supper. We love him. Our lovely rescue cat [no longer alive] was named Hamish McTavish Cheeky Boy...Hamie for short.

Thats lovely Shysal....giving rescue cats a good home is a lovely feeling...we did that with out last two, a brother and sister. Sadly darling William became very ill last year and had to be helped on his way but his sister is still very much the Grande Dame of the house. Unlike your two William had been terrorised by the childen of the previous owners and took us a good few years to really earn his trust. At one of his vet check-ups we were told that his jaw must have been broken at one time. Never mind he had a loving home with us and became a real softy, sleeping on my lap till my legs would go numb.

Tallulah has been shortened to Lulu, which is easier to call out. The two cats made themselves at home instantly, I have never know such a friendly pair.

granto7 Fri 14-Oct-11 18:34:54

Bit late ,but was thinking, maybe , "where and isee" grin

HildaW Fri 14-Oct-11 18:18:59

Having read this.....having now got the song 'My name is Tallulah' running in my head! P.S. great names, you'll have fun yelling those out at night!

When much younger, I was in disgrace for suggesting that a friend's dachshund puppy should be called Yogurt – because it was low 'n fat.

My daughter has two rescue cats called Sage (a sort of tortoiseshell) and Ginger for obvious reasons.

Why not go for names of herbs or spices.

Whoops seem to have joined this forum too late. Must remember to look at the dates.

Heather Fri 22-Jul-11 18:43:16

aww, welcome home little Bugsie and Tallulah!

greenmossgiel Fri 22-Jul-11 18:32:23

Oh that's lovely shysal - I think I was involved in that thread! Now when I see little Tallulah going down the road to school, I'll remember that she's got a wee cat called after her! grin
