Fat Cat

Mr P remarked the other day that Digby seems to be getting bigger. (Mr P is only home at weekends, so is I suppose more likely to notice than I am.) Mr P actually referred to him as a "Fat Bastard", shock with a short "A" sound.

Anyway, this morning I decided to weigh him (Digby, not Mr P, he isn't here). My usual method of cat weighing involves me getting on the scales without the cat, then getting on again holding the cat, and subtracting the lesser weight from the larger one.

Digby, however is the sort of cat that if you put him somewhere, his is likely to stay there for some time. (I put him in the bath the other day to deal with a spider, went down to make some coffee, forgot all about Digby and discovered him still in the bath with one paw over the plughole half an hour later when I went for a wee.)

But I digress. I collected Digby from the second shelf in the airing cupboard and placed him on the scales. I looked at the digital display. I took him off, allowed the scales to sort themselves out, then put him on again.

The result was the same. He is only a couple of ounces short of a stone! shock

Don`t blame her for not liking Lactulose, it`s YUKKY!!

matson Wed 14-Nov-12 15:09:42

thanks phoenix, i will try it, it cant taste anymore unpleasant than having your food covered in sugary medicine! she,s still unwell today, its looking like another expensive trip to the vets.

Anne58 Wed 14-Nov-12 09:57:04

How about a few drops of cod liver oil in her food?

matson Tue 13-Nov-12 18:19:56

help cat lovers, my rescue cat " pudding " eats very little but suffers from constipation! we have done adding bran to food, and paying exorbinant vets prices for " lactolose" to add to food. these methods have stopped being affective and poor pudding hasnt eaten for two days, she needs to bring it up , so to speak! anyone got any other tips!

Hmmm, all these problem cats are male, whereas my beautiful lady cat is purrfect. She is a Master cat who runs rings round the dopey tom next door...possibly then should be a misress. She is a bit wimpy though I'll admit, any suggestion of damp on her paws and she will not leave the house. She watches her weight and is sleek and toned. Wish the same could be said for me smile

Aw, Digby`s lovely, what gorgeous cats you have Phoenix. Hummingbird, will look forward to pics of George. Our Mia will allow herself to be picked up, but as soon as we loosen our grip, she`s off! Definitely not a cuddle cat, but lovely just the same..............as long as you leave her belly and tail alone!!

I bet he's lovely of an evening when he's curled up warm and cozy on your lap. Who needs a hot water bottle with that fantastic furry feline.

Anne58 Mon 12-Nov-12 20:32:56

Hands off MiceElf ! He is such a lovely chap, a bit dim, a bit clumsy, but lovely just the same! He came from Cats Protection a few months ago.

By the way, that picture is what passes as an action shot where Digby is concerned. The qualifying criteria is that he is actually awake. I might have a go at putting another one up.

MiceElf Mon 12-Nov-12 20:28:10

Digby's is gorgeous. I might catnap him.

Marelli Mon 12-Nov-12 20:18:37

Your Digby looks like my cat from years ago, phoenix....and his name was Spider! grin

hummingbird Mon 12-Nov-12 20:17:02

My George is also a big boy - he weighed 6k at his last check up! He's a terrible grump, who will only tolerate petting as long as you don't stray further down his body than the back of his neck. You meddle with him at your peril, and the vet still has the scars to prove it! I love him, though - I'll try to post his picture - not sure if my skills are up to that, though!

Jodi there should now be a picture on my profile page of Digby after his successful battle against the spider in the bath.

phoenix, I just looked at the cats which look like Hitler. Not a great look, but funny!

phoenix - now there's a subject for a children's book!

Nelliemoser Thu 01-Nov-12 16:31:03

A friend of mine had this with a cat, She was getting nagged by the vet regularly as the cat went on getting fatter. The friend eventually discovered that the cat was helping itself to the large sacks of cat food stored in the shed after tearing open the packaging.

Anne58 Thu 01-Nov-12 13:24:26

I often wonder if cats have their own names, if you know what I mean? Sort of "Hello, my people call me Fluffy, but I am Voltirio, slayer of a thousand voles"

MiceElf Thu 01-Nov-12 12:51:37

He's called Stalin because he's a dictator, gets his own way and has left a trail of dead rats and mice in his wake. He's a handsome boy though.

Anne58 Thu 01-Nov-12 12:42:12

Stalin ? I know there is a whole website devoted to cats that look like Hitler, but...................

MiceElf Thu 01-Nov-12 11:03:47

Maybe, but.....my neighbour has six cats who are supposed to stay in their own territory. She feeds them on a fancy vet biscuit. We have a cat flap with a magnet. Every so often I was puzzled as to why my pussy's bones and meat had gone AWOL. Until I crept down one morning and found Stalin stuffing himself with pussy's dinner and my puss crying helplessly. The old devil had us all fooled and worked out how to master the magnets.

Anne58 Thu 01-Nov-12 10:58:29

I'm certain that Digby isn't eating anywhere else, we live in a cul de sac of 7 houses, with more cats than people, and I would have been told if he was dining out! Our Maurice used to bring his friend Fluff Gordon from next door round for a quick snack. Dear old Fluff is dead now, Maurice tries to persuade Toffee to come in, but Toffee is having none of it!

MiceElf Thu 01-Nov-12 10:53:12

Yes, and being such a charmer, he gets dinner at every house too. When he was finally outed and his diet restricted he got thinner, but I felt so sorry that his fun was spoilt.

Anne58 Thu 01-Nov-12 10:45:27

Ah, is that the one about a cat who "lives" at multiple houses, and ends up being taken to the vets by all and sundry?

MiceElf Thu 01-Nov-12 10:42:54

Phoenix, I think the answer to Digby's weight might be found in a wonderful book called Six Dinner Sid. If you aren't familiar with it, it's a wonderful story about a puss with a similar problem.

Anne58 Thu 01-Nov-12 09:49:16

I took some photos of him in the bath, must ask Mr P if he can help me upload them.

Jodi , I'm a cat and a dog person! Just don't have a dog at present.

Digby takes himself for walks, chases leaves, plays chasing games with the other cats etc, so other than trying to restrict his biscuit rations, not sure what I can do.
