Is your dog a wuss?

One of our Border Collies absolutely refused to walk through puddles. We always had to do elaborate detours so she didn't get her feet wet.

Your Basset sounds a real character when. Our 16 month old cockapoo thinks he's cock o the walk, swaggers about - until something makes him fearful. Recently it was one of the garden hens, who he chased, she turned and waved her wings, he ran into the house, tail under his tummy. He gains confidence from usually being taken out with our big, gentle labradoodle who has a protective nature where he's concerned. Taken out without her, he is a real wuss, and sticks close to me.

Our dog, Ben, a Collie cross (with what we have no idea?!?) is definitely a wuss. He's a well built lad, but is scared of so many things, fireworks, thunder, heavy rain, the sound of a staple gun, anything that sounds similar to gunfire, big dogs, dogs that run quickly at him, little excitable dogs who jump on him, children who make a lot of noise, you name it, he's probably scared of it. We've no idea why, he's been with us nearly three years now and nothing bad has happened to him (apart from being bitten by another dog a few months ago), but he's still scared.

Sure enough, she woke me at 4.30 because she wanted to go out. I got up at 7am and she is still asleep upstairs on her bean bag! That dog lives a charmed life! grin

when grin I used to take my dozy doberman down the garden, under a large umbrella, to a huge tree, where he could shelter while cocking his leg!
No way he was going on his own!

Fifteen minutes stood in the pouring rain whilst my dog refused to wee because she was getting wet! I brought her back in and she obligingly shook herself inside the house, then wandered off to bed. Now I will be sleeping with the aroma of damp dog permeating the house. She's sure to scratch at the door at 4am, wanting to go out again hmm

Ella's just the same Gally -jumps in the river and the sea, but needs a dog umbrella !

My late dog, Millie, hated going out in the rain, but once on the beach she entered the sea with gay abandon - back out again and soaking wet, she ran hell for leather for home -duh wink

Our dog Ella hates the rain, goes into meltdown over fireworks and thunder, and is terrified of horses and cows.. I keep telling her she is staffordshire bull terrier, but she seems to think she's a princess smile

I miss my lovely Rhodesian Ridgeback. She didn't like the rain but loved being towelled dry. She'd hog the area in front of the woodburner, drying off her chest and throw us a disdainful look over her shoulder as we begged her to lie down so we could get warm. [heart] emoticon

hilda
The last sentence of your post paints such a peaceful picture.

Our mad dog loves her field runs but is not keen when its really pouring. She would be unbearable to live with without the walks (part springer so needs to go mad at least twice a day). At the moment shes going into a sink of warm water in the scullery and having a brisk towel dry which she seems to enjoy. Highlight of the day is when we light the log burner, she just stands and gazes at the flames for ages!

Greyhounds don't like rain either - or wind - or fireworks - or thunder. Better teach Grace how to use downstairs loo. smile

We used to have a springer spaniel and one night of torrential rain and gale force winds my husband waited all evening to see if it would ease off. Finally, just before bedtime, he decided he couldn't wait any longer and he'd have to take the dog for his last wee despsite the weather. When he opened the door, the dog shot out into the darkness in the direction of his usual walk across the downs. My husband walked for his usual hour and got back home soaked to the skin - only to find the dog bone dry, sitting in the porch. He'd obviously double-backed when he found the weather was not to his liking!!!! We still laugh about that to this day!

Nah! Our fluffy little Lhasa Apsos are made of tougher stuff. They are mud larks and love nothing better than a good romp in the rain, snow, mud ....bring it on! grin

when , I don't believe it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Every time I look up from my laptop I see a painting done by a family friend
40 years ago of the Basset my OH owned when I met him. He was a devil,
untrainable but totally lovable. He had the most beautiful nature.

Bassett Johanna! After getting wet, she's now steaming in front of the fire. I love the smell of damp dog! grin hmm

Listening to the rain outside I fear I'm going to have puddles in the utility room. Whippets hate water.

york46 Thu 22-Nov-12 18:26:16

When - you could have been writing about our dog! She's a gun dog, bred from working parents - but she hates the wind and rain and loud bangs!! At the moment she is toasting her toes in front of the log fire - and who can blame her!!!

I loved it when my dog used to go to the back door and if it was raining, looked at me with an expression that said "Turn it off Mum". However, if you put him on his lead and took him to the front door, he went for it – nose down, legs going. I'm not at all sure what breed he was – I think, a cross between a goat and a monkey.

Labrador when ??

I take my dog out for a long walk before it goes dark, then after that I take her round the garden for a wee. Since 5 o'clock, she has asked to go out, then turned back because it's raining heavily. On the third time of persuading her up the path, she ducked behind me and stuck her head between my knees to shelter! We came back in and she immediately asked to go out again, but wouldn't go past the doorstep. She's looking at me now and muttering, as though she expects me to turn the rain off. grin
