I do think dogs can tell in some way somebody has lost their dog as this is by no means the first time it has happened.
Yes some people may say it is a bit too soon to acquire a new dog but the house seems so empty when there is no dog there and the vet probably thinks the same.
As a family we tend to think there is nothing we can do about the past so we argue that we are giving another dog a home so we are doing good overall so we tend to replace within a week.
I am sure if our previous dog is looking down he would have not wanted us sad and he will know getting another dog is the only way we will be happy again.

Driving home from having Pootle put down I stopped at a roadside cafe to have a coffee and drown my sorrows. Tied up outside was what appeared to be a grisly bear. It appeared he had outgrown his welcome with his puppyhood. That's how I acquired Bear.

I do think the vet was rushing it a bit, getting another dog so soon.

Frank I've had so many times when a vet has been almost as upset as me when something bad has happened [stood in a field in the pouring rain once with a young vet that had reached the conclusion that my old pony wouldn't last another winter..we just put our arms round each other and cried]. I don't think they ever get used to the loss of an animal, either theirs or someone elses..that's why they became vets. I'm glad Andie was able to console him in some way. [I keep thinking of Andie when I see the dog in the new Go Compare adverts even though I know he's not the same breed ].
