"Sprout" confused

A neighbour and I were looking on the Cat's Protection site(s) for the area, and among the Jets', Poppy's, Whisky's, Gizmo's,Joey's etc there was a "Sprout" shock

I don't think it would be top of my list when thinking of names!

Mr P and I did once think that if we ever got 2 kittens, they would be called Hamish & Dougall (from "I'm sorry I haven't a clue") but the kittens my neighbour is currently trying to persuade me to take on are called Gerald and Frank (doesn't suit them at all, if I had them which I won't they would be Kevin and Eric.

But "Sprout"????

When I was a child my friends grandmother had a white cat called Blackie and a black rabbit called Snowy grin at the time I thought she was a crazy old lady but now I appreciate the humour.
We've had a cat called Sam one called Kizzy and our current rescue cat was called Skye when we got her but we just call her puss or DH will sometimes call her Madam.
My friend's cat is a huge black long haired moggie called Maude. I think that's a great name for a cat.

Surely the cat was called sprout because it was a fartypuss

Many years ago my aunt had a black cat which would always be sick if anyone picked him up. The story was that he was getting his own back because they had called him Geraldine! When they realised he wasn't a girl at all they tried changing it to Gerry, but he wasn't having any of it grin

Our eldest son was working in Dubai and rescued a kitten from certain death in a supermarket car park. He named her Lulu after the supermarket and after vast expenditure (his) on rabies injections and air ticket, she now lives with us. Lulu is spotted, very intelligent and dog like in her devotion to DH. I suppose we could change her name to Waitrose, but she is used to Lulu now. smile

LOL does it matter?

The great thing about adopting adults cats- is that you can choose names that suit. Both our current cats were found in a taped cardoard box by the M69/M1 junction- one was very large with a floppy belly- so we called her Pudding, often shortened to Pudster or Pudpud. the other was small and very very soft to the touch, so we called her Silky. Now, why 'sprout'? As said though it doesn't matter, lol.

My last cat had spent her earliest years in a student house and was named Comealong. She certainly knew her name and so we never changed it.

Our cat is called Smoochie a name which he had already been given when we got him. Silly name especially when you are calling him late at night but the rest of the family like it.
Our previous cat was called Hudson because he was black with a white bib and was named after the butler in Upstairs, Downstairs.
DD calls her black cat Salem. He is rather evil !

"sometimes before they were lost"

grin Glamma

thatbags Thu 24-Jul-14 21:25:16

But the potato connection wasn't why we called her it.

thatbags Thu 24-Jul-14 21:24:22

I like Sprout as a name for a cat (or even a child as a nickname). I'm not telling you what we called Minibags until she was five and a half. It has connections to potatoes. No, it wasn't Chips or Mash or Baked or Gnocchi or those sausage shaped things... oh, croquettes, is it?

lucid Thu 24-Jul-14 20:56:09

My DD has a cat named Sprout, and one named Chewbacca and one named Rhubarb. I think they're lovely names for cats. grin We once had a dog named Spud.

glammanana Thu 24-Jul-14 20:51:20

phoenix I quite like sprout the more I think about it,it's addictive isn't it.
One of DS1s stray cat friends was christened Vienna after Rigby's cat in Rising Damp years ago and when we had old family house with a large amount of land at the rear same DS called his pot bellied pig Juicey Lucy. This was a boy who used to bring home animals as "strays" sometimes before they where lost, bit of a Dr. Dolittle really.

hildajenniJ Thu 24-Jul-14 20:43:50

My DD has two cats named Milo and Moudy (diminutive of Mouse). Why she named her Mouse I've never known. Milo is a splendid hunter, he's been seen watching a neighbour's lawn intently, pouncing and coming up with a mole. As a child I had a cat called Tinker.

Rose Our milk was delivered straight from the farm, into the jug that was left out on the doorstep, sometimes by the farmer's son called Walter. He had a tendency to underfill it, and whenever the measure was short, Mum would exclaim "It's that Walter again!" At that time I didn't know his name was Walter, and I thought she meant that he had topped it up with water!

I wouldn't have put it past him.

rosequartz Thu 24-Jul-14 19:50:15

ps DH wasn't he milkman, but used to help the milkman on his rounds.

rosequartz Thu 24-Jul-14 19:49:09

Elegran, my DH used to do that when he was a boy! I daren't ask him if he watered the milk (I am sure he didn't as people used to make their own clotted cream from the milk in those days!)

Gagagran Thu 24-Jul-14 19:48:41

Thanks Phoenix - I didn't know about that. Might have a look. I've still got all my "cat gear" so could easily set up a place for a feline friend again.

Anne58 Thu 24-Jul-14 19:42:55

Gaga the saddest thing I saw yesterday was a cat aged 21, whose owner had gone into a care home! The listing said "only really eats and sleeps now, but perhaps someone might like to look after him"

I believe the RSPCA now have what they call their "Golden Oldies" programme, whereby elderly animals are re-homed with special back up provision for vet care etc.

I know of quite a few older people who would love to have a pet, but are afraid of what might happen to the animal after they're gone. This scheme could (in some circumstances) be a very good solution.

HildaW Thu 24-Jul-14 19:41:13

Had one that ended up being called 'Poggles'.....mainly because my dear Mother (who had an aversion to using proper names for bodily functions) caught it doing a 'poggle' on the carpet when it was a kitten.

Gagagran Thu 24-Jul-14 19:36:20

An old neighbour of ours had a cat called Santa. (Claws!) I thought that was quite clever.

The ones I have had over the years were:

Chimmy
Tiddles
Mrs Puss
Tigs
Sammy
Rocky
Clio
Otto

We have been "catless" for a good while now but I am tempted and keep looking at the Cats Protection site. Mr Gaga is NOT impressed - he says that it would curtail our ad hoc arrangements but I want to know what they might be. We don't seem to indulge in them these days! grin

sherish Thu 24-Jul-14 18:59:37

Our recent rescue cat is called Buddy the Puddy. When it's mealtimes he will answer to anything. I think that's probably true of all cats. Gorgeous all the same.

merlotgran Thu 24-Jul-14 18:49:09

Our rescue cat was given the name Jasmine by the Cat's Protection League. It got shortened to Jazz and now our grandsons call her Jazzer.

I rather like Sprout but it would really have to suit the cat.

Anne58 Thu 24-Jul-14 18:44:29

Bless!

Agus Thu 24-Jul-14 18:31:27

Thank you Phoenix. She was adorable. A totty wee thing as a kitten who liked to snuggle up in the large patch pocket of my shirt. Gave some people a surprise when I answered the door and she popped her head out from my pocket.

Anne58 Thu 24-Jul-14 18:27:02

Agus Fudge is a perfectly fine name!
