Sofa protector

Now that my new sofa is on it's way I'm looking for a sofa protector [Hattie has really sharp claws and leaps onto the sofa]. The current one is just covered in old blankets/duvets etc but I want something a bit smarter. I did find one online [Ashley Mills] but it said it wasn't suitable for leather sofas. Has anyone bought anything similar? I did find one cover especially for dog use but it was nearly £200 shock.

Cheaper to teach the dog that sofas are for only for people grin

I buy cheap throws from Dunelm Mill. My cat knows that she is not allowed on the sofa. She understands the word "no".

So did mine but chose to ignore it. Sitting innocently on the carpet when I got in, cat hairs all over sofa!!

A couple of years ago I had friends here for dinner. I was in the kitchen came into my lounge/diner to find my cat sitting in the middle of my dining room table looking at my friends. They did not say anything, I had a few words to say which she understood perfectly.

My spaniels never ever got on the sofas or chairs but it's impossible to drum that into a whippet [they assume that beds and sofas are made for them]. She's been a kitchen dog for most of her life but now she's getting old we sit on the sofa and watch telly together every night! I think I'll just end up with the sofa covered in old duvets, throws and blankets [as it is now!]. Mind you, last night when she was nodding off it seemed like an ideal opportunity to clip her claws. Managed one before she ran into the kitchen like a scalded cat, then gave me an evil look and refused to leave her basket for the rest of the night [I had to watch Trapped on my own sad]....

That's how to keep her off the sofa, Tegan One claw a night until either you have cut them all so they won't be long enough to do any damage, or else she will have decided not to come and sit on it any more - that so-and-so who sits there keeps chopping at her paws.

House of Bath sell protectors.

We use Ikea blankets (£2.99 each I think) for our sofas - not so much for the dog but for the little ones sticky fingers. They come in a variety of colours, machine wash well and are cheap enough to get 2 or three if you want to cover the whole chair.

We even have red ones we use at Christmas LOL

House of Bath do have a good selection....

Has anyone got any ideas how to stop cat destroying an expensive wool rug?

Tegan Mon 07-Mar-16 18:52:43

A friend of mine [ikidyounot] bought lion proof sofas because of their cats. Not sure how they were proven as 'lion proof'. Perhaps they make lion proof rugs?

Tegan - it's never too late to teach a dog new tricks. My current youngest dog is almost 4 and has always snuggled up on the sofa with me in the evening. About a month ago I decided enough already - he was jumping on/off, wrecking my knitting and generally being a pain. I bought a new big dog bed which lives close to the sofa. I told both dogs "off, on your bed" - the first few nights they couldn't believe I meant it. It was not relaxing but I persisted. Within a few days, the older dog simply stopped trying to get on the sofa, within a week, younger dog would go and lie on his new bed. He occasionally tries it on but I just tell him ' off on your bed, and off he goes.
I wish I'd done it years ago frankly, much more relaxing, easier when friends who don't necessarily want a dog on their knee.

My friend's new leather sofa has been wrecked by her daughter's dog who is living at grannie's. She did use blankets to protect the leather seats but sadly, they didn't work.
Best of luck with this one!

I have bought a couple of throws for our sofas which arrive tomorrow - and DGS arrives in two weeks grin

When we 'inherited' our dog he had obviously been used to jumping onto the settee but he soon learnt that he was only to be allowed up when invited. He was 4 when we got him.

suzied unfortunately no. My bedside rugs which were on laminate flooring were ruined by my clawing minx. I did try spraying Tara with cold water but she soon learned to stand a distance away from my bed. The rugs are now hanging over the banister.

The same happened to the large rug in my lounge and in the end I had to get rid of it. At least she has given up scratching my armchairs but I have a new 3 piece suite arriving next month so I hope she does not have designs on that.

Charleygirl Tara may well be tempted to have a go at the new furniture, as some cats scratch to scent mark, rather than just claw sharpening! You might consider double sided sticky tape on some of the edges/surfaces for the first week or so?

Nansypansy Tue 08-Mar-16 06:51:42

I used clear wide double sided sticky tape at the bottom of my leather sofa that my Simba had started to claw and it worked a treat. It doesn't look fantastic and attracts fur but it certainly stopped him in his tracks. Since I put it on a year ago now, I might attempt to remove it and see what happens with him ......

Charleygirl Tue 08-Mar-16 08:24:14

phoenix definitely a good idea. I must purchase a roll.

I do like having Hattie on the sofa with me these days; as I no longer have cats I look on her as a cat substitute. Once she's on the sofa she doesn't move; in fact if I leave the room she freezes in the hope that I forget she's there. I think she'd lie motionless for 24 hours if I let her. It's one reason why I've put off getting a new sofa for so long, always preferring comfort over style any day. Anyway, not believing in my own stupidity yet again, a few weeks ago I bought a couple of sofa throws to snuggle under; they're absolutely massive and the shop that sells them sells them for way under the going rate, so I'm going to buy two more and use those. Because I'd seen 'sofa protectors' in magazines I'd resolved to buy something 'proper' to go with my new furniture. They're not supposed to be washable, however, but the man in the shop said customers have washed them on a cold wash and they've been ok. I have also, of course, got my new [unused] sewing machine with which I could make something if and when it comes out of the box [along with my new drill and staple gun...all a result of watching the Design Challenge show blush]...

I need a waterproof sofa protector! Wiser is a parson russell terrier, she is nearly 17 and becoming a bit incontinent! We've just bought a new sofa and got throws for it, but we need something with a waterproof backing to cover the whole thing. It needs to cover a 3 and 2 seater corner unit. Wiser is used to sitting on the furniture, and at her age it would be unkind to make her sit on the floor on a dog bed. Any suggestions would be helpful thanks.

Disregard above post!!!
My DH is a remarkable man. He has everything.hmm He went into a cupboard and came out bearing not one, but two waterproof picnic blankets.grin Job done, sofa now well and truly protected. ???

grannylyn65 Sat 23-Jul-16 16:32:08

Love the name Wiser!!
I have to ask .....??

hildajenniJ Sun 24-Jul-16 00:00:17

grannylyn, I've just seen your question. Wiser was the only bitch in a litter of four. Two little girls named the puppies. The first two were Sid and Duggie but they couldn't think of good names for the others. They were born at the time when the frogs were croaking "Bud wei ser" on the TV advert, so the remaining two puppies became Bud and Wiser. We dropped the e for ease of spelling at the vet's.
