car ramps for dogs

But first I just had to share with you dog lovers this ( 2009) story):
www.telegraph.co.uk/news/newstopics/howaboutthat/5897234/Blind-border-collie-gets-his-own-guide-dog.html
We have a border collie, just like Bonnie. There's a happy ending in the report.
And my question - we have a day foster dog too, a breton spaniel. They're both "elderly",12 and 13, and have difficulty getting into the car. I can't lift either of them.
I've looked at car ramps, and they're expensive, for the few times we would use them.
Any other suggestions?

What about a little step stool ? I trained our little spaniel to climb up , amid I've just checked on my Vauxhall Zafira and at the hatchback end it works a treat.

Do you know a handyman? DH could make a wooden one that hinges down the middle if we needed it.

Across the middle I mean, so it folds in half to go in the car.

A permanent worry for me, but fortunately the "sausages in the boot " trick is still working. We had a disastrous experiment with a folding ramp last year, Grace panicked and half-jumped, half-fell off it eventually just made it in but cut her paw on the way in. Emergency vets bill that weekend over £200.
I wonder if a pallet or plastic storage box (fairly shallow) would provide a step up?
Fortunately when Grace is at our regular vets, there is a raised area, sort of "shelf area" with a garden bench, on one side of the car park and if I back up really carefully(always managing to nudge the bumpershock ) she can step up to that then step into the boot. For getting her out, to avoid an over energetic jump down, I remove one of the back seats and she can step down through a rear passenger door. Previous dogs have travelled in the footwell in front or on the back seat of a 3-door, again, stepping in and then up to the seat. But Grace always used to bounce in quite happily, so we stuck with using the boot.
You could simply try to cobble something together with a piece of board a bit like a "bed board" or short door, tack some carpet or a turtle mat to it and start training the dogs to walk up. It might cost you in Schmackos though!

Thanks - the front seat well is an idea I might try. The trouble with my boot is that it has a raised ledge which puts them off.
I thought of using a section from our scaffolding tower - a floor part which has hooks at the ends. I'll have to experiment.

I made my own ramp for our fifteen year old black lab out of a sheet of 5/8 ply he climbs up and I just lift & push the ramp under him

What about something like this? The back bit folds in for storage I think.

I love those steps smile Might just order some.
The only time the dogs go in the car is when the weather is really hot and I take them for their walk somewhere cool eg by the river, which is a long way to walk in the heat.
For me too - I'll be needing steps to get into the car soon.
