I know there are several of us on here who have these beautiful dogs.....can I ask where you take your dogs for claw clips and dentals? We do go back to the kennels where we got them from but they do seem to find the whole thing an ordeal poor dogs. I'm interested to know if you prefer maybe the vet, or a dog groomer to do the manicures?

Grace used to get her claws done at the kennels when she went back to stay, but I suspect they were none too gentle as I could hear her yelping and making the most awful noise. Yes it is an ordeal, they really feel pain and it is not unknown for the quick to be cut into by an overenthusiastic kennel maid. I decided after her OP last year that she would not go into kennels again as she is an old lady and I couldn't abandon her again, so we don't go away!!
The nurses at the vets are very good at claws, quite gentle ,( even so I go out to the car park!) but even that has become a problem as she has to be taken in the car and frankly I am not sure her back legs are up to jumping in like she used to sad so I haven't tried again since her last annual check up and boosters in August . Moral, only get a dog small enough to lift!
I may well have to find a way round this ere long, (Pets to Vets sounds like a good service) but I will cross that bridge when I have to! Sorry not to be more help, front claws are an issue although I find walking her on pavements keeps the back claws short enough anyway.

Daphne Broon has a beautiful greyhound called Grace. Daphne is more qualified to know the answer. I would have thought the vet but that can also be traumatic.

That should have been "op" as in operation, not OP!!

Hi * sheena* we have Bella just four and with us since July,I personally wouldn't cut her nails as with my previous dog ..a Lab, both being black the blood vessels are harder to see and the danger is cutting back too far..Bella's nails are fine at the moment the but will take her to vets as we did with Ellie previously same for dentalssmile .They are beautiful aren't they

We had two black labs downtoearth before we had the greyhounds, and yes, all black nails are a nightmare...my two greys are black (well going a bit grey now as getting old ) and their nails are awfully hard to judge...no way would I try them myself..and they hate it anyway and we get the typical greyhound "scream of death" the minute their feet are touched... I swear it's a yell just in case anything hurts grin !

DaphneBroon Sat 29-Oct-16 18:43:34

They do scream don't they? I find it totally unnerving. The other week DD and I had been at a SIL's birthday in London and got back after DH had gone to bed. Grace had somehow got under his chair at the table and when we came in she couldn't stand up because her legs kept sliding away on the tiled floor. The panic!( and that was just me as I feared her back legs had "gone") However I managed to get them under her and got her up, and she limped off very shakily to her bed. But the screaming!!
Any normal dog might have yelped a bit, but I was expecting the RSPCA on my doorstep!

Hattie won't let anyone cut her claws; the vet gave up trying. The only time they could do it was when she was having an operation. And yet they're such stoic dogs when it comes to illness. It worries me that I'm walking her on claw that are dangerously long but she won't let me near them. She sometimes bites them herself though. When I get the nail clipper out she hides under the table.

Peggy, our younger Jack Russell, is as good as gold when she has her nails clipped at the vets but until last week wouldn't let us touch them. DH has a stainless steel table in his workshop and while I was out shopping he plonked her on it and clipped her dew claws. She didn't bat an eyelid and we're wondering if it was because the surface of the table is the same as the vets so in some daft way made her feel more secure.

I will make myself scarce again next time they need doing and see what happens.

Sorry cant understand why the link is so long

They've been recommended but I don't think she'd let me near her feet with anything. Sometimes I can catch her unawares when she's asleep and cut one #sneaky. She looks at me with suspicion for days afterwards....

Suppose we are lucky as never need to cut our dogs's nails. I bought this product when my GSD could not walk much, however she didn't last much longer - I think it is probably hiding in the back of a cupboard.
