We have four, all with names and personalities! They are allowed to roam the garden for part of the day, would love it to be all the time but they can be a bit destructive to my flowers. OH has fenced offmhis veg patch after theyndestroyed all the baby cabbages in short order! They have a decent size run with wood chippings to scratch in for the rest of the day. Currently two are not laying but the other two keep us reasonably supplied, just not enough to give away eggs at the moment. Would recommend as lovely pets but a bit messy when they choose to wander into the kitchen looking for a treat!

I used to love feeding the hens we had when I was a child. Apparently we also kept pigs - I don't remember them running around but do remember a salted half hanging from a ceiling hook grin

My DS's in-laws got some chickens last year for when the family visited, so our townie DGS could feed them. MIL visited earlier this year and brought some of their eggs with her. We all thought DGS might not want to eat them but he had no qualms - it was my roughie-toughie son that couldn't! He'd probably have become vegetarian if she'd brought chicken meat, yet he used to accompany his dad when he went round the farms collecting animals for the abattoir where he worked grin

We have 12 at the moment, various colours, 2 cockerels and the rest hens. For some reason the hens are laying well for a change, even with winter approaching.
We don't have names for any of them except "Whitey" the only white hen left who is a good age and shows signs of giving up sad.

We don't anymore at one point we 18 mixed varieties all freely running around the garden many tales to tell all had names as did the ducks. Henny penny and my last girl chicky where my favourites so cuddly and funny used to follow me around ....sadly we no longer have any girls as we moved and have a communal garden

We have six hens and one cockerel. We'll probably buy a few more next year as the older ones are no longer prolific layers but enjoying their retirement.

We're not allowed to keep hens here, but I do like feeding DD's and collecting the eggs. Before the cockerel died he used to strut around every afternoon with his harem (very funny to watch!).

Yup. Mixed flock of 12. Bit of a panic yesterday as the automatic door timer broke on the pophole so we had to hot foot it to buy another one. Fixed up last night and working well so far.

My sister keeps chickens, all named, prolific egg layers, they're part of the family and enjoy sneaking into the utility to share her cats food. She recently got a couple of bantams, one decided she preferred living with an old French man's chickens in the same village, she did get her back but she returned, sister says she's obviously happier in a bigger flock!

Yes we keep chickens, at least my husband does, he is very fond of them and has named them. Obviously anything with a name cannot be eaten. We do get lovely yellow eggs though,. When one of the chicks was ill a while ago my husband was going down to the field several times a day to hand feed it.

Do any of you keep chickens, if so, do you name them and are you as obsessed as I am....I just love them to bits? Always shed a few tears when I loose one This little lady is "Ginger" friendly and follows me everywhere!
