fireworks

I don't remember fireworks being as noisy when I was a child. My parents wouldn't buy 'bangers' and the Catharine wheels, volcanoes, rockets etc didn't make much noise apart from a 'whoosh'.

Now all the fireworks seem to have to make a noise and the place sounds like a war zone. I suppose I'm getting old and miserable, but I don't see why they have to be noisy and think the manufacturers should make them quieter!

Must say did anyone see the programme last night with Lucy Wosley on Tudor Fireworks? It was an eye opener.

Also I don't like fireworks and tend to go to bed early. Also we use to have a cat who was deaf and would sit out side just looking.

I would love to go to bed earlier than midnight tonight( new years eve) but know that our poor dog will be scared of all the fireworks we can expect tonight, so will cuddle up with her on the sofa with the tv turned up to cover the noise of the bangs, which seem to be getting louder every year.

Going to try this tomorrow and this weekend

Reading the online Mail I noticed that 2 animals died of fright with fireworks. A dog died of a heart attack and a pet rabbit also died of fright.

One of my cats was mortified the other night. He's getting old and was going scatty looking for somewhere to hide.

There's a local idiot who delights in letting off bangers at 10pm and it's been every night since the end of last month. To want to strangle it is an understatement. Why do they do it ?

Hattie has had 2 bad evenings and is hyperventilating already even there have not been any fireworks yet! I think she associates getting dark with the bangs!
It will take a few quiet nights to reassure her.

Can your frightened cats see the fireworks? I had a cat who was only scared if the curtains were drawn, but was all right if she could see what was going on.

It doesn't work with dogs, unfortunately.

I completely sympathise with you and have been actively campaigning for a complete ban on the sale of fireworks to the general public for some time now. There is NO need for them to be on general sale - organised displays would allow people to still enjoy them safely without the terror they cause not only to animals, but to PTSD sufferers and many others, including some with autism. The only benefit of our Labrador getting old (he is almost 13 now) is that he is getting quite deaf and so doesn't hear fireworks as much as he used to - but for the whole of his life, he has been petrified of them, to the extent that we used to have to drug him up to the eyeballs - not practical when idiots insist on letting them off for weeks!

Over on Mumsnet some posters who were am experiencing pet anxiety problems, re the loud fireworks, were advised by other posters to try Thundercoats for cats and dog.

If any of you have an Amazon Alexa type device (Echo or Dot) there is a very good programme on there for desensitising pets to fireworks.

I just can not understand why the ones that sound like a huge bomb going off are purchased they have nothing spectacular about them do they just a big bang they must cost a lot of money to buy.
This has been my Dolly's first encounter with firework sounds and she has done very well no signs of being frightened at all,Poppy sadly had to be cuddled close until about 10pm when the noise stopped.
Just got to get over tonight then hopefully they will be over and done with.

It’s true they seem to be getting louder, but that’s probably because more people go and watch fireworks at big social events nowadays, not just a few in the back garden.
The main problem is that it isn’t confined to bonfire night, starting up to a fortnight before and up to a fortnight later in some cases.?

I've never heard of silent fireworks, but my dog is terrified of the loud bangs they make.

For the past two nights he has been hiding behind the sofa, shaking while fireworks have been loudly exploding and rockets whizzing overhead. I felt we were being surrounded. The same will probably go on this week as well!

It's great that children and families can enjoy these, but fireworks are becoming increasingly louder, and these can be a danger to all animals.

We are in a farming area, and cattle, sheep and horses become terrified.

It was like the Blitz here on Saturday night but none of my dogs batted an eyelid thankfully, they just snuggled up close and went to sleep. Fireworks have been louder for a few years now and can't see it ever improving.

Yes there are some 'silent' ones about, there have been some horrific banging ones around over the past few years, I was woken up a few nights back by what I thought was an explosion, it was a damn firework.

My poor cats were quite frightened, more by the screeching ones, than the banging ones, I feel dreadfully sorry for those poor animals that are outside
