On Saturday I adopted a cat .great I thought till I realised I had a hard job on my is 18 years old on a chicken diet only and dried food raw chicken makes me sick.anyway cat is constant being sick and miowing all night and day.I read her medical records and she has a blood disease that would mean frequent visits to the vets.which I can't afford. So I asked owner to take her back and she picking. cat up tomorrow.I dk health problems and realise taking on a special diet cat is too much.I feel a failure.I have had lots of cats over the years.her owner is emigrating back to NZ and won't take the cat with her.she rescued it from NYC 15 years I doing the right thing? Told her to take the cat to Celia Hammond cat trust where someone can see to the cats dietary needs .

Sorry to hear this moggie57, but this is why one should get all the facts before deciding to take on an animal, so that an informed decision can be made.

You do not need to feel like a failure.

I love cats, but if any cat I had developed that sort of medical problems, I would feel obliged to have it put down.

IMO that is what any responsible cat owner would do, and certainly never allow an 18 year old animal to be re-homed.

You are doing the right thing. We've always had cats in the family for well over 50 years. Unfortunately our 2nd from last ended up with diabetes & other complications (twice-daily injections plus tablets morning & afternoon by the end) & it cost us thousands over her last few years. We didn't begrudge it as we loved her dearly. We had to let her go though when she stopped eating.

Then our last one got diabetes as well. She was only with us for a few more months, when we decided to let her go as well as she wasn't taking the medication plus other complications.

It is hard to take on any animal with special diets/medication. You did the right thing for you. Don't feel you let the cat down.
