Bad dog owners

Barking dogs can be a statutory noise nuisance. I reported a neighbour's dog to the Environmental Health officer at our local council. They can take action if you can hear the dogs inside your own home when the windows are shut.

May7 - I use hand signals for ours now he's becoming deaf too. Hubby says I'm deaf and I say he is lol

I don’t think our old spaniel cross would have licked burglars to death - she’d probably have hidden behind the sofa! As she did once when a dd’s friend brought his rabbit for a visit. Such a wimp, but much loved, RIP.

We have had two bungalows for sale on our street, both the new owners have dogs, one is a little yappy dog who barks constantly the other is a great big dog that has a very loud bark it barks every morning and on several different times of the day, We have two barking dogs behind us and we are on the main through fare to the park, since we moved here we haven't ever seen as many dogs in our lifetimes, note to self do not buy a property on the front buy one in a field on it's own

Exactly! The family behind me have 3 kenneled dogs, rescued from Turkey - they bark for hours at a time. The family are lovely but moving soon, so I hope the new people are as nice, but without the barking dogs.

My D has a yapping dog on one side. It is put out into the garden each day and left to bark. The dog in the house on the other side is told to stop if he barks and he obeys straight away.
If some people can control their dogs then every dog owner should.
A barking dog is a nuisance to everyone.

I once had a friend whose dog would welcome anyone into the house but not let them leave unless a member of the family opened the door. Very effective.

I'm another one that trains their dogs to bark only as an alert. It's not difficult but you do have to start early
I use hand signals to stop them when I am alerted. Can't abide the noise of owners shouting at their dogs or their children for that matter, it just all adds to the general confusion.
One of my dogs is now deaf so hand signals have come in really useful for her.

MawBe your cartoon reminds me of a saluki that we used to know. Her owners came home to find that the house had been burgled and she was asleep on her basket. She was a bit dozy. When a friend was staying with them with his own dog which was a mongrel they played a game with them. They place a treat on the back of a dining chair. The saluki walked it crying. The mongrel knocked the chair to make the treat fall off.

The saluki was beautiful, elegant and could run extremely fast.

Another Grump here, next door to us have 4 yappers who they claim are their 'children', you wouldn't let your children shout and shout so why do they let their dogs bark and bark, we have reported them numerous times but apparently because it doesn't go on long enough we can't do anything despite the face that the noise is X 4

We had 10 crazy spaniels in kennels here at one point. Taught not to bark - we were burgled one night and not a peep out of any of them! Next morning, one had a woof at the Police Officer who came to investigate!

Thanks for replies. I just can't face trying to bring the matter up with them in a kindly way. People are so aggressive these days and selfish. Our neighbours the other side are a pain too with a car a large long van and a motorhome parked outside, plus her mother is there with her car so nowhere to park and their friend visiting parked across our drive , my husband asked him politely if he would move his car and he was verbally abusive to him. That's how people are these days. I digress. I might try one of those dog whistles people can't hear.

My own dog did bark at visitors until told to shop but he's rather deaf and going blind now.

Where I lived before my neighbour opposite bought two active young Visla dogs and then went out and left them every day for 8 hours. They would bark, whine and sit in the window all day looking sad.

It made me so very angry and sad, not with the dogs but with the irresponsible owner. I offered to walk the dogs during the day to give them some exercise and company but they were too big and badly behaved for me to manage and I had to stop. I told her the situation and she honestly didn't care one bit.

OP, my neighbours dog barks a lot too and I have a dog My dog is not impressed either. She obviously understand dog talk and knows when this dog is being an idiot as she will listen and then <sigh> and if the dog is on about anything important she will jump up and investigate!

DH and I have always managed to train our dogs not to bark, except to warn us of someone coming to the front door and to stop when told to.

Like you, I am annoyed by a neighbour's three small terriers yapping literally all the time they are out in their garden. And like yours, my neighbours if they react at all, do so by shouting at the dogs!

I have resorted to telling my cats to threaten to eat the next dog that barks at me when I am in MY garden.

Our previous neighbour used to go to the pub regularly and came back with unwanted dogs. His wife was frightened of them and used to shut them out in the garden to bark and bark and bark. We did bring it to the attention of the dog warden and a couple of animal charities, but they said there wasn’t anything they could do.
