Dearly beloved, departed cat

His protege has rather unfortunately in my opinion got used to being called "Sorte" which is the Danish equivalent of "Blackie" which admittedly has always been popular for black cats, rather like calling ginger cats Ginger.

I tried to change it feeling that these days it might cause offence, but he obstinately refuses to answer to anything else!

He obviously himself associates his name with the only people who have ever fed him, a neigbour whose own cat would not accept him, and me. So Sorte he is!

Vets nowadays seem to be much more understanding and kind. It sounds like yours was grandtanteJE65. My more recent times when having beloved cats PTS have been much better handled. Last time the vet kindly let us out the back door as we were crying so much and didn't want to go out via the waiting room.

I also cried buckets while one of my beloved cats was PTS at the Vet’s.

What a truly awful experience Aveline.

My young vet (he could be my grandson easily age-wise) was so kind, taking all the necessary time and checking twice that Trold had died peacefully before stroking him and saying , " sleep well".

He didn't even mind me practically drowning his consulting-room in my tears.

We're feeling better now the first week is over.

Grandtante so sorry cats are so gorgeous and special. I dread anything happening to mine although Amie is relatively young yet and healthy.

Aveline poor you your vet wasn’t very compassionate at all. Pets burrow into our hearts and become part of the family. Love to all who have lost a beloved pet

The first time I made that sad trip to the vets with dear old Podge I was just a schoolgirl. My Mum dropped us off. The very matter of fact vet gave him an injection and I was sent to the waiting room with Podge as he died in my arms. Looking back that was an awful thing to do. The people in the waiting room were very kind and obviously knew what was going on. I remember a kind workman sitting next to me produced a mouse from his pocket to try to cheer me up. Then the vet came back, said, 'Is he away?', and took poor Podge from my arms. I was dismissed.

I too have been the one to make the last sad journey to the vet with five cats over nearly sixty years and sympathise so much. We have loved all our felines but the gallant Oliver, who had an international fan club, is the most missed, even thirty years down the line.

I love that Trold has trained up his ‘replacement’. They really are part of the family. The last time we had to make that one way trip to the Vet was in 2010 and it was China, who was 18 years old, and our longest live cat. My husband was abroad at the time and my elder son in Iraq. I thought I would do the whole think quietly and let them all know aftwards. Too late, my younger son rang me for a chat at work so I told him the situation. He was on the next bus from London. That night we sat in the garden with China and a bottle of fizz. We toasted China and the next morning took him to the Vet. Son insisted on cross-examining the Vet just to make sure China really was very unwell. Afterwards I went to work, dropping son off at the bus stop. Of course I then had to tell OH and daughter what had happened and let son know in Iraq. It’s never easy, is it? Three months later Milo and Ripley became part of our family.

So sorry grandtante65. Our beloved pets stay in our hearts forever, don't they? You gave him a loving home and a nice life.

Our gentle female Lab. The perfect pet. Soft, kind and brave. Would have defended us to the death. The whole family grieved for her.

My little black female American cat. The boss of the boys despite being half their size.

My big, fat, black, soft, boy cat. So cuddly and gentle, but a demon hunter.

My big, rangy, scrawny black lad with a white star. Soft and kind. Couldn't retract his claws. A highly intelligent boy.

They'll always be in our hearts.

Grandtante So sorry to read of Trold’s departure. He was obviously a very considerate cat and made sure to train the newcomer and ensure that he’s up to scratch!

What a lovely post grandtante. I have a cat and they have a special place in our lives and I’m sure we mean a lot to them too. ?

So sad Grandtante, and such a lovely tribute. My almost 19 year old boy is curled at my feet. He is very thin now, and very deaf, but still seems to enjoy life and can still jump on the sofa and the kitchen windowsill. I know it can’t be too long until we have to say goodbye, but I dread the day. He has outlived two other cats and one dog, all still missed, but he has been the longest by far and I really can’t remember life before him.

Tara was PTS in January of this year and I still miss her. She was a superb companion.

Lovely post Grandetante our pets have a special place in our hearts don't they. We lost our two older dogs recently and have two rescue dogs now. We still remember all the fun and pain we had with the first two and talk about them often.

A lovely post but so sad. I remember hearing about how Trold recruited and trained an assistant cat. Sounds like he did a good job. RIP Trold.
