My cat is terrified of fireworks. He hates cars as well (which is probably why he’s still with us). It’s one of the few times he actually likes to be picked up and comforted. He spent most of yesterday evening on the sofa listening to Smooth Radio.

We worked with Sam since he was a puppy and he's totally unreactive to fireworks, gunshots or cars back firing. In fact last night he sat at the patio doors enjoying the display :-)

I know some breeds are naturally more nervous but I do think better early training helps a huge amount.

I don't think my dog likes classical music because it definitely didn't work for her last night - nor did 2 tranquilisers. and we have tonight to get through yet! shock

It's funny, but my cats (both current and passed on) have NEVER reacted to the bangs from fireworks. The only animal we've ever had that was scared of them was a Labrador we had once (supposedly a gun dog hmm).

We've just had a minor miracle happen here. Our dear old terrier has been afraid of fireworks in the past, but she has just sat behind the curtains happily watching some in the distance. All we could see of her was her little tail wagging cheerfully away from beneath the curtain hem.

I reckon she's got used to them after all these years. Hope all your dogs are ok.

I'm afraid people without pets just don't get it or don't care Shandy57.
I'm pleased that your dog is doing okay though. Luckily Classic Fm and the special music is working so far. My border collie is fast asleep.

I can't believe it. It's like the Battle of the Somme here, my new next door neighbour's have everything - lots of rockets, catherine wheels, you name it. Can hear them and see them through the skylight. Fortunately it looks like my dog is a lot more deaf than I thought, and hasn't barked.

They should have at least warned me, they can whistle for apples off my tree next year.

They started here at 4.30pm... a record low. My dog walking friend told me earlier that she heard them at 11.30pm last night.
My husband has just made me laugh though, he said l didn't classical music helped calm dogs. I've put ClassicFM on too early.

Unfortunately the lads near us don't seem to know this. Actually, it doesn't matter what time they're set off they're still noisy, dirty and scary and spread chemicals and detritus over the area.

Is it general knowledge that the law in Scotland has changed? Fireworks can only be set off between 6pm and 11pm, except on 5th Nov when it is up to midnight and New Year when it is 1 am

Aveline Fri 05-Nov-21 12:27:17

What a nice idea. Hope the music works to calm the poor animals

I already posted this yesterday.

It will be my dog's first 5 November with neighbours, I do hope none of them have fireworks in their garden. There is normally a huge public display at the rugby club some miles away.

I'm off to the beach in a minute to give him a good run, and will go out again whilst it's light.

We did sedate our border collie many moons ago and it was heartbreaking, he still dragged himself up and out of his basket to protect us from the noises.

I hope so, I am willing to try anything, DanniRae.
We have had fireworks everynight this week. He is already on Yu Calm tablets and we use a diffuser.
Good luck with your dog, l hope it works for you too. I feel so sorry for them.

DanniRae Fri 05-Nov-21 12:01:53

I really hope it works Mayal!
It's an awful time of year if your dog is affected by fireworks!!shock

Thank you so much for this information. Our dog was barking last night from 5.00pm onwards. We had the radio and TV on and he still could hear the darn things.

DanniRae Fri 05-Nov-21 10:24:27

A friend has just text me to say that Classic FM radio are playing special music designed to calm pets afraid of fireworks, tonight and tomorrow night, between 6pm and and 10pm. I will definitely try it....my poor dog barks like crazy all evening.
