Help! Difficulty with worming tablets

We tried everything with one of our dogs but he could sort out a tablet from a piece of meat, cheese or whatever, wait for a bit until you thought he'd swallowed it, then spit it out.

The vet advised gently holding his mouth shut and stroking his throat until he swallowed; sometimes it worked, other times the tablet would be in his cheek ready to spit as soon as my back was turned.

Why can't they do the medication in liquid form so you can use a syringe?

Be glad the don't. My vet thoughtfully prescribed medicin in liquid form for my cat!

I had to go back the following day and ask for tablets as there was simply no way I was going to be allowed to squirt medicine into the cat's mouth!

One of my cats can smell a pill from a mile away even if it's wrapped in fillet steak! My vet showed the perfect way to give a pill. Get the cat ready, head back, prise the mouth open and blow in its face just as you're shoving the pill down! Works every time in the surgery. However, at home, I agree that the liquid wormer is the easiest.

Give up on the cat burritos! Get the liquid wormer that you apply to the back of their neck…….simples.

Managed yesterday with help of DH , a difficult task! I took the advice about wrapping her in a towel , getting onto the floor and my DH holding her between his knees while I administered the tablet., What a performance!!! Any way job done. You are correct Fanny - she can smell my fear! Next time I will try the spot on wormer.

That is hilarious!

We had a dog when I was a kid. Mum gave her a tablet hidden in her food. Dog munched away happily, cleaned bowl afterwards by licking thoroughly in case she'd missed anything. And walked away, happy that her tummy was full, but would still accept a treat!
A few moments later my mum uttered her surprise....right in the middle of the dogs bowl was that one little pill, licked clean of food but totally whole!! ??
Later on in life we had a Staffy. Soft as claggy toffee. He ignored pills in food, unless we wrapped them in a treat like ham or a sweet - he just gulped that down so never knew about the pills!
We've had/got cat/s.
Pills - give to him indoors, he'll sort it, my skin is delicate!!

My last cat who was as daft as a brush used to froth at the mouth if you put a pill in her mouth then shake her head and the pill would shoot out.
My current cat who bites me quite often is the opposite I kneel on the floor sit him between my legs hold his head back with my left hand, gently open his mouth with the ring finger on my right hand, drop the pill into his throat. which I've been holding between the tip of my index and middle fingers, then stroke his throat. Works everytime. He has a flea pill once a month and worm pill once every three months.

I'm a jaw-squeezer (at the hinge) with my left hand, and I poke the tablet down with right hand index finger. Doesn't make me sound like an animal lover, does it?

Frustrated in trying to pill your cat? Here is a little pilling humor to help keep your spirits up. Please DO NOT try these methods at home. :-)


How To Pill a Cat


Pick up cat and cradle it in the crook of your left arm as if holding a baby. Position right forefinger and thumb on each side of cat's mouth and gently apply pressure to cheeks while holding pill in right hand. As cat opens mouth, pop pill into mouth. Allow cat to close mouth and swallow.

Retrieve pill from floor and cat from behind sofa. Cradle cat gently in left arm and repeat process.

Retrieve cat from bedroom, pick up and throw soggy pill away.

Take new pill from foil wrap, cradle cat in left arm, holding rear paws tightly with left hand. Force jaws open and push pill to back of mouth with right forefinger. Hold mouth shut for count of ten.

Retrieve pill from goldfish bowl and cat from top of wardrobe. Call spouse in from garden.

Kneel on floor with cat wedged firmly between knees, hold front and rear paws. Ignore low growls emitted by cat. Get spouse to hold head firmly with one hand while forcing wooden ruler into cat's mouth. Drop pill down ruler and rub cat's throat vigorously.

Retrieve cat from curtain rail, get another pill out of foil wrap. Make note to buy new ruler and repair curtains. Carefully sweep up shattered figurines and vases from hearth and set on one side for gluing later.

Wrap cat in large towel and get spouse to lie on cat with head just visible from below armpit. Put pill in end of drinking straw, force mouth open with a pencil and blow into drinking straw.

Check label to make sure pill not harmful to humans, drink glass of water to take taste away. Apply Band-Aid to spouse's forearm and remove blood from carpet with cold water and soap.

Retrieve cat from neighbor's shed. Get another pill. Place cat in cupboard and close door just enough so that head is showing. Force mouth open with dessert spoon. Flick pill down throat with plastic band.

Fetch screwdriver from garage and put cupboard door back on hinges. Apply cold compress to cheek and check records for date of last tetanus shot. Throw t-shirt away and fetch new one from bedroom.

Call fire department to retrieve cat from tree across road. Apologize to neighbor who crashed into fence while swerving to avoid cat. Take last pill from foil wrap.

Tie cat's front paws to rear paws with garden twine and bind tightly to leg of dining table. Find heavy duty pruning gloves from shed. Push pill into mouth followed by a large piece of fillet steak. Hold head vertically and pour 2 pints of water down throat to wash pill down.

Get spouse to drive you to emergency room, drop off cat at vet clinic on the way. Sit quietly while doctor stitches fingers and forearms and removes pill from right eye. Call furniture shop on way home and order new dining table.

I'm cracking up laughing here. Soo funny.
I'm having to give my poorly cat 3 tablets a day at the moment and I don't know who's more stressed, her or me. Her jaws are firmly locked and it's a nightmare.
More tips welcome please.

Hope you find something that works! Sorry I have no tips - I find dogs bad enough & most of those will eat anything! But it's one of the reasons I'd never have a cat (that & their killing habits, risk of something happening to them while they're out, litter trays... ) ?

For my Bugsie's daily thyroid medication I use Pill Pockets or Easy Pill, but a bit expensive for the occasional tablet. He knows he has to eat it before I give him his dish of food.

Have you tried the spot-on type of wormer, I use Profender? I warm it in my pocket then sneak it behind the neck without them even knowing I have done it. Same applies to flea treatment.

My vet friend taught me to give pills by scruffing the back of the neck and lifting the front end of the animal, which naturally causes the mouth to open. Poke the pill in the side gap in the teeth, either by hand or with a syringe-type applicator. Wait for a swallow before releasing.

I used the method that merylstreep said but after the pill was in I held our cats mouth closed until he swallowed. Otherwise he would spit it out again. I knelt on the floor and held him between my knees , gently, of course nowadays I wouldn’t be able to get back up again!
The dog has her pills wrapped in a small piece of a Dairy Lea cheese slice, no probs, but if we put it into a piece of cheddar she will eat the cheese and out pops the pill.

Sorry about all the extra stuff. I had to copy the entire text as my tablet couldn't copy the bit in the middle without it.

Dogs are a doddle compared to cats, we have both and it's always the cat who is difficult. We use MerylStreep's method as well.
Our vet never has a problem and is so casual about it. Think as Grandtante said you have think you will win.

My vet showed me how to do it.
Hand on the top of the head opening the mouth with index finger and thumb. Pop tablet in shut mouth. It never failed.
This was with a large feisty cat.

This is what I do, and it has always worked even with the cats I have had that were definitely not good about taking pills.

I close the kitchen door very firmly before starting, so that the cat can't run away.

It helps if you make it clear to the cat that this is one fight YOU are going to win.

I used the towel around, open mouth, and coat pill in butter method. It slides down easier.

We thought one of our cats was easy to give tablets to. However, when we moved house we found a neat pile of spat out tablets behind the sofa!
