Ours will always be the beautiful German Shepard. Loyal. Loving. Protective, big bundle of fun! We have had many over the last 60 odd years. Always well trained! I do love the mini schnauzers although never owned one.

I've always adored whippets, greyhounds and lurchers.

I have found rescues to be very good at describing the characteristics of a dog and we always choose older ones. However, most rescues won’t allow adoption by people who have young children visiting, for obvious reasons. It sounds as though you have a dog at present so I too hope you won’t need to consider another for a long time - and by then the children will be older.

Yes, I have looked at Airedale Rescue. At our age, we would probably want to take on a mature dog, but my main concern is getting a dog who is good with small children. Hopefully, we won't have to go down that road for a while.

Bossy, there are a number of Airedale rescues in the UK. Have you googled? You would only need to pay the charity a donation.

I've always loved greyhounds and got my girl in May 2020 aged 5 and a half. I'd just retired due to covid, wouldn't want to have had one when working full time. She is so gentle and affectionate with everyone, sleeps a LOT, but is so good on walks and in the house, considering her life in racing kennels.

Bossyrossy Sun 19-Mar-23 14:19:06

Not sure we would be able to afford another Airedale now, the prices are astronomical.

Grannybags Sun 19-Mar-23 14:16:56

Aww Bossyrossy he looks just like our old boy Buster. He lived to be 13 but it was his back legs that went eventually.

Such a lovely dog and brilliant with our sons - very good at football!

Bossyrossy Sun 19-Mar-23 14:02:38

Curlywhirly - you have my sympathy. Our beautiful airedale has just had his twelfth birthday, about the maximum age for a dog of his size. His back legs aren't too good anymore, and he can't jump into the car now, although still loves to go for a walk, but often stops and sits down for a rest. He's such a lovely dog, so good with the grandchildren, we will be heartbroken when his time is up. He's our fourth airedale, so obviously our favourite breed.

Maw both my DD’s love greyhounds. They’ve renamed them as Skinny Friends. grin

We lost our first Border 7 years ago at age 14. Such happy days. Unfortunately we’re too old to have another dog as much as we’d love to. I miss the cuddles so much.

Fleurpepper Sun 19-Mar-23 08:03:36

Not meant to be- it is breed related and a fact we have become very aware of.

kittylester Sun 19-Mar-23 07:42:20

I love Miniature Schnauzers - we have had 2. But my favourite would be basset hounds. We have had 2 of those too and they are the loveliest dogs ever.

We also had an afghan - beautiful but bonkers!!

We won't have any more dogs as they are a tie. We have cats and can just get the cat sitter to pop in twice a day.

MawtheMerrier Sun 19-Mar-23 07:38:40

Superfluous question!

LilyB14 Sun 19-Mar-23 07:36:45

Looking glamorous even after a walk in the woods!

LilyB14 Sun 19-Mar-23 07:35:32

Love all dogs but yo can’t beat the style of Lily my 9 year old cross breed🤣

Greyduster Sun 19-Mar-23 07:27:24

We had a lovely labrador and also a Scottish border collie (beautiful but rather highly strung) but my go to breed now would be a border terrier. I love them. I think I’m too old to take on a dog now but if I did, that is what it would be.

NanaDana Sun 19-Mar-23 07:15:08

No, you're not being oversensitive, Joseanne. The topic is quite clearly breed-related. One comment about the advantages of "hybrid vigour" is fine, but then to repeat it seems superfluous, and rather preachy, IMHO.

loopyloo Sun 19-Mar-23 07:09:21

Can't quite believe it but have my first dog. Had cats before.
He's a rescue from Rspca in Ringwood. Jack Russell terrier Cross.
Probably 12.
JRs my favourite breed but they are noisy whereas my new friend hardly ever barks.
Know very little about his previous life. But yesterday he was very happy to get in the car and be taken to a pub for lunch.
Not safe to be left alone as he will eat almost anything

NanaDana Sun 19-Mar-23 06:30:49

We had Labradors for years. Our last one was a "failed" guide dog, but only because she was far too friendly, wanted to be everyone's best pal, and as such was too easily distracted. She crossed the rainbow bridge some 10 years ago now at the ripe old age of 14, and we miss her so much, as with all our previous pooches. We then had no dog for 5 years, but finally relented and now have two Cavapoos.. Molly, age 4, and Murphy, age 15 months. Wouldn't be without them. Such affectionate, playful little pooches. As for "favourite", too hard to call, as we're just totally "dog daft" anyway.

BlueBalou Sun 19-Mar-23 06:26:22

All our dogs have been rescues, never considered a purebred or anything else.

Maya1 Sun 19-Mar-23 06:12:35

So sorry to hear your news wwm2, you must be feeling so sad. I know how your are feeling, our border collie has been poorly for sometime and 10 days ago l finally had to say goodbye to Finn.
So l would choose Border Collies, he was my best buddy who never failed to give me his unconditional love. I miss him so much.

Whitewavemark2 Sun 19-Mar-23 01:39:10

Here is Duncan, dozing in the sun. He had a better day I think.

Goodbyetoallthat Sun 19-Mar-23 00:37:21

I love all the pictures. Our Bernese mountain dog has us all (including AC when they are home) exceptionally well trained smile.

I also think you fall in love with breed that you have. This is our third border terrier with his favourite toy. No-one has told him that he's quite a little dog and when he barks he sounds quite fierce. He's certainly no lap dog as he's only cuddly with me but I adore him.

The Border Terriers are the best. They are the most loyal intelligent little (big) dogs. We lost ours just before Christmas, he would have been 17 next month. It was a life well lived and I miss him every day. He was my little shadow.

WW2 ❤️
