I have a very active miniature schnauzer who will be having a cryptorchidectomy for a retained testicle in a couple of weeks.
He usually has 3 walks a day, at least one off lead when he runs like a mad thing.
I know to keep him calm with a blow up collar or baby grow type vest but I’m asking for suggestions of what to do to keep him stimulated for the days after the surgery. He will chew pizzels and braids for a while and he loves to tear up junk mail and chew a plastic bottle for a few minutes. He isn’t interested in anything in his toy box and is fussy with food.
I’m putting together boxes and toilet roll middles but all suggestions of what to do with them are welcome. I’m happy to buy him something if that is recommended. The days will be long without his daily walk so all suggestions are appreciated.

Presumably he needs some walking... can you break it up into very small chunks?

Someone will come along soon I think with ideas. 🤞

Wrap bits of kibble/treats in paper and stuff an egg box with the parcels.

It depends how invasive his operation will be. My boy had this operation, but the vet was able to remove the undescended testicle without invasive surgery when he was neutered. Sometimes it is retained in the abdomen, which is a more invasive procedure, but I was told they wouldn’t know until they operated exactly what was needed.
My dog was fully recovered within a week, and he was able to go for short walks on the lead within two days. He’s very food orientated, so we used Kongs and other puzzle food toys to keep him occupied. He also likes TV programmes with dogs on, and birds and squirrels (he’s a spaniel) so he watched a few of those too.

Thank you, yes difficult to know exactly what is needed and how he will be. I will try the wrapping treats for him to find and try the tv. We rarely have the tv on so that could be novelty for him.

This happened to one of mine, the retained testicle being found relatively easy, although his poor penis was cut one end to the other. It didn’t bother him and was short lead walks within days. Bless him he was only five months old, much too young, but the vet said the retained testicle would have caused him hormonal problems due to it overheating inside his body cavity sad
