Anyone else as daft as us with their dogs???

Peggy sleeps on one side of my double bed, often snuggling up beside me under the duvet. When I became concerned about her slight incontinence I bought a couple of those blue, waterproof pads (my 90+ year old mother used to use them) as a precaution. Thankfully they haven’t yet been put to use.

Two weeks ago I had an operation and DD stayed over for a couple of nights to care for me when I got home. Peggy returned from kennels, overjoyed at both seeing me and snuggling down under the duvet.

Now, why did I go out of my way to ensure DD didn’t spot the blue pads? Would she have believed they were actually for the dog? 😂😂😂

You’re right, escaped. I’m completely barking! 😂

You're all completely barking, but I would do the same!
Not only if they old, but our young boy had salt poisoning this summer and I spent the entire night awake in a chair to check he was OK.
I'm sure they know that we want to help them.

Peggy is nearly fifteen. We are growing old together and I have to make allowances for some of her ‘old doggie’ problems like stress wees (thankfully small) gradually losing her sight and appearing to be deaf as a post when it suits her.

Nothing matters. We’ve been together through some tough times and I have no idea how much longer I’ll have her (one of my JRs lived to be 18) but I treasure every day she’s by my side and nothing is too much trouble to keep her happy and contented.

Our dog is eleven, from a puppy he always slept in a crate and used to be very happy to go in there at night, sometimes he would go in on his own. About six months ago he started to be distressed for a while after going into his crate and he also lost a lot of weight so we got rid of his crate and let him choose where he spends the night sometimes he settles downstairs on his favorite sofa, sometimes on our bed, sometimes in the chair in the bedroom, sometimes a mixture of all three places because we leave the bedroom door open for him. He has now put on the weight he lost thankfully. In your place sankev we would do the same because our dog is very important to us and loved very much.

Over the years our dogs have always been members of the family. Their personalities have been encouraged to develop, and the love and happiness they have given us all is immeasurable. I would do anything to make my dogs happy. When our old dog couldn't manage the stairs to lie in her basket in our bedroom, we carried her. I appreciate we were lucky that we could manage that. In the morning she would carefully negotiate coming downstairs, tail wagging madly, with a member of her staff either side. Dear old girl - I will miss her for ever.

Absolutely agree Louella12. We have also stopped going abroad for the same reason. It’s so heartwarming to see so many people truly loving their beloved pets after so many awful stories about neglect and abuse in the news. They are such devoted animals unlike many people I find.

Can totally relate to this.
And would only recommend someone buy a dog if they are prepared to do as you are doing. Being a responsible dog owner means loving and caring for the dog as you are doing.
Well done.

I think you're lovely dogs owners smile. I've only ever had cats, and the last one was feral before we took him in. I slept downstairs with him for 4 nights until he settled in. The cat we've got now ( a stray that we ended up with in September) sleeps with me most nights (he has the run of the house).

Absolutely with you, sankev!

We're actually not going abroad on holiday due to my inability to leave our ageing JR.

And we had a greyhound and a lurcher who ended up being unable to climb the stairs towards the end of their lives. Luckily my husband was able to carry them up but we'd definitely have stayed downstairs had we no other option.

Our dogs have given us so much love and happiness over the years.

I just adore them

Well they are part of the family. When a previous dog was very ill she liked to lie on the sheepskin next to my bed and if she needed to go out I would carry her downstairs and then down two sets if steps as she would only go on grass. When thus little rescue had an opera and was very distressed I lay in a sleeping bag in thr floor cuddling her all night for 3 nights getting no sleep. They have given us so much love and happiness that to me these sacrifices are worth it. Who else is always happy to see you, makes you the centre of their world, shows you absolute loyalty and couldn't care less whether you were rich or poor, beautiful or ugly. I definitely don't think you are mad.

Our much loved chocolate Labrador is almost 14 years old now. He now has quite bad arthritis. We are managing his pain thanks to our wonderful (though very expensive) vets and he is happily pottering around and still enjoying his short walks. Problem is he can no longer manage the stairs! As he has always slept at the bottom of our bed he becomes very distressed if we leave him alone down stairs. Hence we are now sleeping downstairs every night in our living room! Thankfully we have managed this quite comfortably and he is much happier and more settled. Many friends agree that they would likely do the same whilst others think we have lost the plot! The way we see it is he has been our constant companion and shadow for nearly 14 years and we have no intention of abandoning him now. Any other grans out there made similar decisions.
