Good Morning 1st May 2026 "May Day"
Tuned To 'The Archers' For The First Time In Months.
It will soon be a year since we lost our beloved Cairn, and we have really struggled without another being in the house.
We don’t feel up to getting an older rescue dog - which invariably comes with issues which at almost 80 we would really prefer not to have to deal with.
Gradually since Christmas, we have wondered about offering a home to an older rescue cat. I have got as far as talking to cats protection today. I actually have lived with cats all my life apart from the last 14 years so am very happy with a cat in the house.
Has anyone any thoughts on the subject and advice to offer please?
She will want to come out and explore at her own pace. When we moved here, we put our cat into his own room and after a day or so he came out, sniffing around and found his bowls. Admittedly he knew us but had spent a week in a cattery prior to the move, which he hated. You might end up with a few accidents if she sprays to put her marker down but in my experience it’s males who do this more. Dreamies will help ease her in. I’ve never known a cat to refuse those but just a few per day. I hope you enjoy having your lovely little cat.
Welcome home, Roo! I hope you have many happy times with her, WWM.
I don’t understand the prejudice against black cats. I know they say it’s because they don’t photograph well for social media but is there any more elegant creature than a black cat? 🐈⬛ Mind you, I’ve never met a cat I don’t like so maybe I have no judgment.
so happy to hear she is in her forever home - will take a day or two. Oh joy, enjoy.
We adopted a kitten/young cat from a local Cat Rescue but it took a while before were actually ready as our much loved cat of 20+ years had been pts earlier in the summer. Then a few months later up popped a rescue site on FB.
We expressed an interest but were due to go on holiday but she was still available when we returned. We picked her up and on returning home - we let her out and she hid. We periodically went to look for her and make a fuss of her but left her to her own devices. The following morning she made her first foray into the living room and never looked back. She's an affectionate and playful cat - on her terms!!
Roo will soon settle in too - so don't be surprised if she is shy to begin with - she will soon make herself at home. Wishing you and Roo lots of happiness.
Well WW, I'm guessing your new friend is back home now (4.45pm Sunday). Don't bother if some of the rules/guidelines don't work for this cat. Some cats are bright/confident enough to go out within a few days of arriving, depends if they're used to it.
Very few cats need a new cat bed, we've had a couple who were fine with a cardboard box dressed up with a fleecy blanket, some will adapt to/demand a person bed of course!
Oh, and toys, almost any bit of string will do, and some go mad for a laser pen. Deffo no need for expensive toys!
So she has gone from hiding in her cardboard box to under the bureaux.
Dear little soul

The best cat I ever had was a little black cat called Douglas. Although we had many cats after him he was irreplaceable. I love black cats, black dogs and black horses and don’t understand why people don’t like them. They say that the black dogs in kennels are always overlooked but I set my heart on a black dog when my fawn whippet died. Breeders always try to find a way to register a dark horse as brown rather than black because they, too, are supposed to be unlucky. I assume that Roo is named after Roo in The Hunger Games? My boss named her little black dog Roo for that reason.
Our first dog was black and called Roo. He was the most intelligent dog we have ever had. Cross whippet, but not sure with what though.
Whitewavemark2 I have kitty envy.
We have had two cats in this house, both came to grizzly ends.
DH has put his foot down and said no more 😿
Hello Roo!
Let me introduce myself, my name is Barney and I was adopted too, from a Cats' Rescue, 11 months ago. You are in good company here - lots of us and photos too! Lots of stories to share!
I thought I would pass on some tips I have learned, which may help you get your humans into shape.
You are on an immediate winner, being a Rescue.
Your mum and dad will think you are the most beautiful thing, clever beyond words and beyond reproach.
Play on it.
You will be praised to the skies for using a litter tray, the cat flap and finding your way to the feeding station. I mean, how difficult is that?🤷♀️.
Lap it all up😂.
I am enclosing a photo of myself for your inspection.
This is lesson no.1 - Trust them and let them see you are their forever friend.
Then they will take your picture and show all their friends.❤️
Lots of oohs and aahhhs.
I suggested a rescue cat to DH but he's not keen on cats so said it was a cat or him.
I’ve nipped from under the bureaux to the bottom of my climbing frame, which is soft and black and very secret. I’m eating my dinner when no one is around. I’m so clever that no one has been able to photo me, in fact my humans have never really seen the whole of me.
They may take a photo of my secret place failing all else in the morning. They’ve been advised to leave me alone so I’m definitely on a winner here😄😄.
to the bottom of my climbing frame
I'm assuming it's Roo's climbing frame, not yours, Whitewave.
If it's yours, I'm in awe 😯
She's settling in at her own pace and on her own terms 🙂
😄 I got it for £10 from CPL - cheap at the price! I can hear DH in there at the moment talking away😊
I contacted Cat Protection to offer being a foster parent but unfortunately I have to collect the cat food from somewhere miles away not buy my own cat food. Never mind. Not meant to be.
I hope you all have a good night's sleep!
The centre was heaving this morning, bearing in mind that it was Gail force winds and pouring with rain - I was astonished.
catterygirl that is a shame. Difficult to understand.
I am at the moment in a slight state of panic.
This morning she was in her secret space and we shared smoothing and a little chat. I left her door open slightly so that she could get used to the household noises. I went and did some cooking. DH hoovered and dusted etc upstairs.
We’ve lost her😮😮😮😮 we have scoured the house of everywhere we can think.
No outside door has been open, I’ve been on my hands and knees looking under furniture, behind curtains et .
We can’t find her anywhere - I’m beginning to get really worried, but sense tells me that she is in the house somewhere! But where??
She'll come out when she's hungry perhaps.
One of my neighbour's cats managed to squeeze behind a radiator, believe it or not.
On top of a high cupboard? Or in a cupboard?
Cats like Dreamies don't they? Can you leave a little trail?
