How much exercise does your dog get?

As some of you might know, or mayne not,.I take care of other people's dogs.for.a living. Have been entertaining these 4-legged friends.for 50 years.

It really depends.on the dog, and not.just the breed, vut the personality. Some dogs get tired from sniffing for 30 minutes, some.frim running (towards and away from.nothing), some from swimming. Some are very lazy - others mischevious. To gather info from others about time for excersising ones dog doesnt seem to be pertinent to me but 30 min outdoors every 4 hours seems reasonable. They are NOT little humans.

My whippet wakes up at 7 for her breakfast. Then goes in the garden. Then goes back to sleep till 12 although she usually wakes up for a mid morning snack ( Mini Bonio) at 11. My partner takes her for a walk and then a play in his garden which is much bigger than mine, and brings her home. She usually doesn’t become really animated until evening time ( which is the time when puppies seem to go manic and bonkers) usually when I’ve sat down to watch something on tv. If it’s raining she doesn’t want to leave her duvet at all. She’s a dog after my own heart.

But 5.30 am is very early to be nudged into starting the day, so there's a waiting game going on here!

Our terrier cross is 15. I take him out after breakfast and dinner and he walks about 6 houses down the road and is adamant he wants to come home. He cuts in front of me and pulls me back
He wanders around the garden during the day. His sight is now going but on the whole he is comfortable.

Thank you everyone, so interesting to hear about your lovely dogs. I think he’s getting enough and he has my company nearly all day. He loves his toys (typical ratter, you should see him shaking them) and has great fun with the garden hose.
So plenty of mental stimulation.

It sounds like your dog is getting enough exercise. And fun times in the garden too. As others have said, it's the quality of his exercise time, both physically and mentally.

I exercise two young golden retrievers. We do 60 to 90 minutes in the morning, either by the river or on the beach. They often have their walk broken with a coffee stop in a café where they have a different type of stimulation, having to lie under the table and behaving!
I'm sure they'd keep going all day, but I think dogs have to realise that the day has a lot down time to it as well.

When DH was alive and we had a kennel full of working spaniels, they would just lie around snoozing - lazy by nature. Walked twice a day, off lead they’d be exercised, but taken to work was a different matter. They’d have to use their brains, remember their training, obey whistles and work - they used to come home hungry, happy and exhausted!

Mine gets about 40 mins morning & 20 mins evening, mostly off-lead. That's everyday, on holiday & if we're on a walk "outing" it's much more.
If I'm pushed for time, I throw balls for him to retrieve on one of the walks.

I used to walk my dogs an hi out r morning and evening., I had very fit dogs. I no longer have the fitness i did plus I have a huge sensitive labvwho can react if he’s feared of a new dog
My dogs get 30-45 mins off lead in a secure woodland plus scent games etc in the garden
They’re happy and content

My five year old Cockerpoo gets and hour or two off lead in the morning and play with her doggy friends then couple of hours in the evening some on lead and some off . Plenty of time to sniff and answer "pee-mails".

LaCrepescule Tue 06-May-25 18:23:04

Yes, he loves to sniff and has plenty of time to do that in the garden. He’s off lead (loves fetch) as much as he is on.

My 3 yo lab has 1 hour 2 x a day , but he’s young and full of energy , luckily I’m fit and healthy . If he doesn’t have an evening walk , I do hunting and sniffing games in the garden which tires him out .

RosesandLilac Tue 06-May-25 17:50:40

My two get 45 minutes to an hour in the morning, often longer, plus at least 45 minutes in the evening with big dog off lead as much as possible and tiddler on a 10 meter long line.
They have access to the garden all day as well.
Big dog also has an hour and a half with a dog walker twice a week, off lead.
If they don’t get long walks they don’t seem to mind, especially if the weather’s really bad.

My cavalier king charles bitch (6yo) gets 30mins on lead walking and 30mins off lead. I've always thought that off lead time is more important. If she wants to run, sniff, play she can.

Sniffing tires a dog out as much as walking. So sniffing around for low fat treats in the house and garden will keep him exercised. I’m struggling to walk at the moment and my partner is walking our dog. She should have far more exercise than she gets and we don’t let her off lead, either, so I feel really guilty.

ViceVersa Tue 06-May-25 17:12:27

As long as he seems happy, that's the main thing. If you are worried about him missing out, you could try doing some mental stimulation exercises with him - even things like scattering some treats around the garden for him to find. That often tires them out just as much as actual walks do.

I just looked at the Kennel Club website and it says that JRTs only need up to an hour daily. Fellow terrier owners may disagree but makes me feel better.

I hate to say it but I think I’m slowing up a bit. I’m 67 and had two lots of foot surgery in the last year and am still in some discomfort. I do seem to lack the energy I had until recently.
This has affected how much I exercise my dog. He’s a 6 year old terrier cross and very energetic and most days I only manage an hour in total - 40 minutes in the morning and 20 in the evening.
He curls up in the evenings and switches off and seems happy. But I can’t help feeling a bit guilty.
