Yes silent labrador, he stares at me to achieve his aims. Very very rarely barks.

My friend has a RidgeBack, they don’t bark as they were hunting docs and it was bred out of them.

The only time my whippet barks is in the evening and I’m in the kitchen or somewhere else in the house and she’s telling me to come and sit on the sofa with her. She doesn’t do it in the daytime. I did turn back from a walk recently because I was struggling with my leg; I thought she’d be ok continuing with my partner but she just barked and barked at me so he had to leave the walk, too. She barked at a cow once. And at a cat that was in the front garden ( unlike my other dogs she has never lived with cats). She sometimes gives a little growly wuff as a way of saying hello to some other dogs.

We had a rescue dog some years ago and she never barked. She would growl if someone or something got too close to her.

I’m the same with the cat experience like MrsQuigley. I had 2 kittens about the same age to be company for one another.
Well that didn’t work as Missy ignored or bullied Mac . He was a sweetie although born to (I think ) a feral farm cat. She preferred the indoor life while he was outdoors more.
She was a part Silver Bengali torti cross and he a lovely ginger. She was very talkative and his mouth would open but no miaow would come out.
Sadly we lost Missy to cancer at 16. And very surprisingly Mac then found a voice.
Now at 18 he has an overactive thyroid which may explain his increasingly loud and sometimes distressed sounding calls.

No I haven’t ever had a silent dog but I do have a cat who was pretty much silent for the first 14 years of her life. She was born to a feral mum and missed out on early human contact and was very nervous. Only heard her squeal when she was playing with her big brother. As much as she was quiet her twin sister was always up for a chat. When the noisy one died two and a half years ago May suddenly found her voice and hasn’t stopped since.

Back ages ago we used to have golden retriever cross, who rarely barked.
His noise, particularly if there was food around & he was being ignored, was an ultra-loud burp!
My cocker's fairly quiet & ignores the neighbours rather yappy dog, but once he gets started barking he is hard to stop.He won't bark if he's the wrong side of a door, even if he hears us calling.

My last 8 years have been shared with a very noisy dog. She barks loudly at every single noise she hears and I have tried everything and paid behaviourists wasted money, nothing has ever helped to stop the noise.
I recently got an anonymous letter from a neighbour, complaining and redoubled my efforts. With constant consistent effort I have made a big difference and I hope life will, in time, become better for both of us.
Thank your lucky stars if your rescue dog’s only problem is being quiet!

I have a miniature schnauzer which as a breed was bred as guard dogs . Not vicious but to act as a warning. He’s actually quiet compared to many of the breed but my neighbour says he’s the nosiest dog he knows. If he suddenly barks you jump out of your skin. Enjoy your peace!

We had a Patterdale, she was far from silent!

Perhaps your dog was beaten for being vocal?

Be careful what you wish for
My cocker is pretty quiet If he wants something he sits in front of me and stares can be a bit disconcerting. Do you really want a dog that is barking all the time

My dog is a rescue from Croatia and she is a mixture who looks like a Patterdale with longer legs. She is not vocal at all in regular ways. The only time she even makes a noise is when she goes to the vet and gets excited, she loves the vet, and even then it’s more of a squeak. I live on a park home site and there’s no fences around my lawn so I have fastened a long wire lead to my steps to let her wander around. Yesterday she had got a bit tangled and couldn’t make it back to the door. She had been out longer than normal so I went to look and she was just standing looking at the door. If she wants to go outside or she thinks it’s mealtime she just comes and stands in front of me staring. Oh, she does growl at dogs who get too close!
