I've posted about my beloved tortoise before on this forum. I've had her for 63 years (64 years in July this year!) having bought her with my pocket money on my 5th birthday from the vegetable stall in our local Inner London market for the grand price of 2/6d!
Over the years, she has hibernated at several addresses in London and Hertfordshire, always in a wooden box stuffed with hay and insulated and protected in various ways with chicken wire (to keep out rats at one point in my childhood!), old carpet, blankets or, over the last few years, that stuff that delivered frozen ready meals come in.
This afternoon I went to check her as I usually do about this time of year. When I touched her leg I heard the hiss of air as she pulled her leg back into her shell. She is not yet fully awake as she is still surrounded by the hay and has not made her way to the top of the box, but the relief of knowing that she has safely got through another hibernation has made me very happy!
Just wanted to share.
